I need help removing the ads234 spyware/virus (I am not sure what it is). I have seen from other logs that this pesky thing is not easy to get rid of. I ran a cwshredder. There was no infection detected (unless I did it wrong). I have a Hijackthis log. Can someone please help me?! I am not very computer savy, so please be as detailed as possible! Thanks!

Hi CrimsonTragedy. Welcome to geekstogo.

Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.

Please run a free online virus scan here (tick the "Auto Clean" checkbox):
http://housecall.antivirus.com/

And a free trojan scan here:
http://www.moosoft.com/
Reboot
Download Ad-aware from: http://www.lavasoft.de/res/aaw6.exe

Install the program and launch it.

First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.

Next, we need to configure Ad-aware for a full scan.

-> Click on the Gear icon (second from the left) to access the preferences/settings window

1. In the General window make sure the following are selected:
  • Automatically save log-file

  • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal

  • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
2. Click on the Scanning button on the left and select :
  • Scan Within Archives

  • Scan Active Processes

  • Scan Registry

  • Deep Scan Registry

  • Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s

  • Scan my Hosts file

  • Under Click here to select drives + folders, choose:

  • All of your hard drives
-> Click on the Advanced button on the left and select:
  • Include additional process information

  • Include additional file information

  • Include environment information

  • Include additional object details
-> Click the Tweak button and select:
  • Under the Scanning Engine:
    • Unload recognized processes during scanning
    • Include basic Ad-aware settings in logfile
    • Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile
  • Under the Cleaning Engine:
    • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
-> Click on Proceed to save the settings.

-> Click Start and on the next screen choose Activate in-depth Scan at the bottom of the page and then choose:
  • Use Custom Scanning Options
-> Click Next and Ad-aware will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected.

-> Save the log file when it asks and then click Finish

-> When finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose Select All from the drop down menu and click Next).

-> Reboot your computer.
If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic

Thank you for your help. I scanned with Trend (Housecall) and removed the uncleanable files. I could not scan with Moo (it kicked me off the internet everytime I tried to download the Cleaner). I already had Ad-aware and scanned as you suggested. In addition, I removed all internet temp files and windows temp files and emptied the recyle bin. I then rebooted and used the Trend and Ad-aware scans again. I still have the ads234 appearing in my address bar and it continues to prevent me from going to internet sites. What a pain! Here's my new hijackthis log. HELP! Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Thank you for your help!!!!! I did as you instructed and the 'ads234' seems to be gone. I scanned with Skybot and got a "DSO Exploit" message. I believe I have the latest updated version of Spybot. Should I be concerned? Is there anything else I can do to protect my computer from spyware problems? Here's my last Hijack log. Thank you again, I really appreciate what you all are doing for us CIP's (Computer Illiterate People)!

Here's a link to fix the dso exploit problem in spybot. Since the creation of this site microsoft actually has made a patch for this, but spybot still finds it even though it's fixed (as long as you have all windws critical updates).

http://www.nsclean.com/dsostop.html

You can run this small utility to stop the entry from coming up in spybot, you can also tell spybot to ignore it by starting spybot program and click "mode" at the top and click advanced mode. Then click settings, ignore products, and look to the right side of the window now and click the "security" tab. put a check in the box next to dso exploit. It is not a threat, but spybot just needs a patch itself i guess. Your last choice is to just ignore it yourself because as long as you have windows updates, it's not actually there.

Congratulations! Your system is CLEAN <_<

How do you prevent spyware from being installed again? We strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster (it's free for personal use) Click Here.

Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page.

It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks. Click Here to make sure that you have the latest patches for Windows.

These next two steps are optional, but will provide the greatest protection.
1. Use ANY browser besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness. We usually recommend FireFox Posted Image.
2. Install Sun's Java. It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine .

It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder if everything is working okay.

After doing all these, your system will be thoroughly protected from future threats. :D

Yeah! I am so glad to be rid of 'ads234'! I am trying to install Firefox and Sun's Java, per your recommendation; but the automatic download for Java encounters an issue when trying to install, and both Spywareblaster and Firefox are taking a very long time to load (as if ithey are is not loading at all). OK, I just got a message that Internet Explorer could not download Firefox and the operation timed out. Got same message for Spywareblaster. I wonder if this is related at all to the problem I am having with loading my children's games from a CD (you are helping me over in the Hardware Forum with that issue). Well, I thank you J.R., for all your patience, knowledge and help!
Sincerley,
Theresa
P.S. Do you skate vert? What's your favorite brand for a board?

J.R.,
Just like the other downloads; acts as if it is loading (for a very long time), then times out (no download). Any advice?
Thanks!

On your IE toolbar try Tools -> Internet Options..., Click the Advanced tab, and the Restore Defaults button. With SP2 a bar will popup at the top of your browser window asking for approval to download. You have to click on this bar and allow the download.

Well, I followed instructions, but no luck. Bar does not pop up at top of browser asking for approval to download. Furthermore, I still have the same problem of the download appearing to go on for a very long time and then timing out (attempted download unsuccessful). I am at a loss for what to do. I have been reading at the Microsoft site to see if there is anything there that might apply, but it is a bit intimidating and overwhelming to try to sift through all their info. (sort of like having some symptoms of an illness and going through an entire medical book to figure out what the illness might be). I appreciate all the help you all have given me so far. Thank you!
