Hi:
I need some help removing PeopleOnPeople spyware (aproposmedia) which keeps showing up no matter what I've tried. From reviewing other posts I've successfully (I think) removed Webrebates and thought ai_loader was gone for good too. I disabled system restore, ran adaware, deleted found items, rebooted several times, and finally enabled system restore. Everything seemed ok for a few sessions when ai_loader once again showed up. Another adaware session showed some files located in "_RESTORE" folder with the .cpy suffix that adaware wasn't able to delete.

I know there's bugs in the soup since I've got a real slow auto shutdown most times and sometimes I have to do a hard shut down.

I'd appreciate any help or advice. I've downloaded HJT and have it on my desktop but didn't want to run it without some "handholding". Thank you in advance for your assistance and I'll be checking back.

Regards,
Glidemaster

I was about to work on your log, but I think you need to do a few things first to clean it up.

Please run a free online virus scan here (tick the "Auto Clean" checkbox):
http://housecall.antivirus.com/

And a free trojan scan here:
http://www.moosoft.com/

Download Ad-aware from: http://www.geekstogo...n=download&id=5

Install the program and launch it.

First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.

Next, we need to configure Ad-aware for a full scan.

-> Click on the Gear icon (second from the left) to access the preferences/settings window

1. In the General window make sure the following are selected:
  • Automatically save log-file
  • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
  • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
2. Click on the Scanning button on the left and select :
  • Scan Within Archives
  • Scan Active Processes
  • Scan Registry
  • Deep Scan Registry
  • Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
  • Scan my Hosts file
  • Under Click here to select drives + folders, choose:
  • All of your hard drives
-> Click on the Advanced button on the left and select:
  • Include additional process information
  • Include additional file information
  • Include environment information
  • Include additional object details
-> Click the Tweak button and select:
  • Under the Scanning Engine:
    • Unload recognized processes during scanning
    • Include basic Ad-aware settings in logfile
    • Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile
  • Under the Cleaning Engine:
    • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
-> Click on Proceed to save the

settings.

-> Click Start and on the next screen choose Activate in-depth Scan at the bottom of the page and then choose:
  • Use Custom Scanning Options
-> Click Next and Ad-aware will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected.

-> Save the log file when it asks and then click Finish

-> When finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose Select All from the drop down menu and click Next).

Please delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\
C:\Temp\
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\
Also delete your Temporary Internet Files, be sure to also select delete all offline content.

-> Reboot your computer.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic.

CW:

I went through the steps as suggested including updating my version of AdAware to AdAware SE....Found lots of stuff, 341 critical items that my earlier version missed. However the program got hung up on the deletion stage....the deleting selection bar stayed up for about 15-20 minutes and wouldn't go any further....task manager didn't indicate any responding problems so i just kept it going but it wouldn't go any further...I re-ran it and tried to delete only half of the selection and the same thing happened....Help!

Also the housecall virus scan picked up 2 items which it couldn't delete. The msgs were:
Unable to clean c:\_RESTORE\temp\A0000180.cpy because it is currently in use, and
Unable to clean c:\windows\system\ai_loader.exe because it is currently in use.

If you can help me unravel the problem with deleting selection with AdAware I can keep moving on out....

Thanks so much for your time.

Try running a search for c:\windows\system\ai_loader.exe, then right-click and select delete. Just delete the ai_loader.exe, not the system folder.

Please clean out your temp files again.

And about Adaware, I know there's probably a better solution, but just recently mine kept getting hung at the same point. After several attempts of installing and uninstalling, I finally went to the location where it got hung and opened up that folder and just clicked on that file. And then I ran it again and it worked.

I haven't deleted my temp files yet since I wanted to follow your instructions in the exact order.....hence the hangup with AdAware...How do you find the location where it gets hung up?
I went to the folder with ai_loader.exe and right clicked and selected delete. I get the msg "Can not delete ai_loader: access is denied. The source file may be in use.

I feel like I'm back to where I was two days ago <_<

I'll go in and delete the temp files as requested..

Hi CW6:

I reran AdAware and viewed scan results by "target family" and deleted them one by one. Whew!

There were a bunch of files in the "c:\_restore\temp folders with the file appendage of .cpy that could not be deleted.

I deleted all the files I could in Temp folders and rebooted and rescanned with HJT.
Here is the log, and thanks for the support,
GM

Dear CW6:

Thanks for your continued support and encouragement. I did everything as directed. I do note that I now seem to have a new folder on my desktop called "backup" which appeared after disabling/rebooting/enabling system restore.

Also, there is still one ref O4-HKLM\.....item with ai_loader left in the HJT log. I noticed it the first time but since I wasn't directed to check the box I left it unchecked......Here is the latest log:

Thanks,
GM <_<

Congratulations! Your system is CLEAN <_<

How do you prevent spyware from being installed again? We strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster (it's free for personal use) Click Here.

Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page.

It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks. Click Here to make sure that you have the latest patches for Windows.

These next two steps are optional, but will provide the greatest protection.
1. Use ANY browser besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness. We usually recommend FireFox Posted Image.
2. Install Sun's Java. It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine .

It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder if everything is working okay.

After doing all these, your system will be thoroughly protected from future threats. :D

Dear Geeks to Go folks:

How come the latest HJT log I submitted still shows the following item if the system is clean:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AutoLoaderAproposClient] "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\AI_LOADER.EXE" /HideUninstall /HideDir /PC=AM.SKHN /ShowLegalNote=nonbranded

Ai_loader was the main reason I submitted my problem....Do I need to remove this item using HJT, disable restore, reboot, and enable restore again?

Thanks,

Glidesmaster

Sorry! I was apparently in too much of a hurry reviewing your log. <_<

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AutoLoaderAproposClient] "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\AI_LOADER.EXE" /HideUninstall /HideDir /PC=AM.SKHN /ShowLegalNote=nonbranded

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. :D
