I did everything that the sticky said. There were a few errors when I ran HJT, which supposedly were supposed to be put in notepad, but I didn't see anything. Hope it was integrated into the log itself as opposed to a separate report I couldn't find.

Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.

Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
• You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
• If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
• DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
• If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
• When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
• Save the report to your desktop

Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

Thanks, I'll try this when I get off work. Just one question--on the sticky page, it was mentioned that I shouldn't have two antivirus programs. I already have Norton installed (a lot of good that did--after I ran it, there were still 2 infected files it said it couldn't remove) so should I uninstall it?

Unfortunately, I started off the day by making a MAJOR rookie mistake. I woke up early so that I could hopefully get all this stuff cleared up before my daughter got up, and when I booted up, I got a message asking if a firewall should block windows explorer. I was so sleepy that I thought it was asking me if I wanted to shut down explorer, so I clicked 'no'. Immediately, my desktop was covered with icons for poker and [bleep], and two new programs were in my startup menu--popup blocker and spyware remover. I went ahead and did everything you said in the previous post, however, ewido kept crashing while I was selecting which files to remove. I'll post all of the results, then I'm going to redo all the stuff I did in the first steps and post it as another reply to avoid confusion if the steps don't remove everything.

I went ahead and restarted the whole process. I was able to get ewido to run this time (guess it just wouldn't work in safe mode).

I still have popup blocker and spyware remover on my startup list, and I tried to find them in the add/remove programs part of the control panel, but they weren't there.

I'm pretty sure spy sheriff is gone, though.

I ran another HJT for the two new programs after I'd done everything from the sticky.

2. Boot into safemode to do this keep tapping F8 on your keyboard while your PC is starting up you will get a menu select safemode.

3. While in safemode open Hijackthis and click scan. Then tick and fix the following in Hijackthis with all windows closed except Hijackthis.

Go to start, run type "services.msc" with out the quotes find the service.

svchost.exe

Right click and stop it, make the start up type to disabled. When you have done that go into Hijackthis > open the misc tools section > delete an NT service and delete moto. Then post a new Hijackthis log here in a reply.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

To protect yourself further:

• IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.
