I have done everything listed in the "You Must Read This Before Posting a HijackThis Log," to no avail.

DrWatson's PostMortem Debugger Error happens sometimes when I right-click on things. It freezes the computer to the point where I have to manually restart it.

Unrelated to that, I've been getting this dialogue popping up for months: it's titled 'Update Manager' and states, "Would you like to view the available updates for your 'Powered by Sonic' products?"

I've never downloaded anything 'Powered by Sonic.' In fact, Sonic has me so annoyed that if I DO have something powered by Sonic on my computer, I'd like it gone, pronto.

Here is my log.

Welcome to GeeksToGo :tazz: My name is Tom. Please follow the instructions below.

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

This will likely be a few step process in removing the malware that has infected your system. I encourage you to stick with it and follow my directions as closely as possible so as to avoid complicating the problem further.

You have a nasty CoolWebSearch infection. First we will need to download a few tools that will help us in the removal of your problem.

Download about:buster by RubbeRDuckY Here.
Download CWShredder Here.
Download and install CleanUp! Here

Save all of these files somewhere you will remember like to the Desktop.

Run the CleanUp! installer. You dont need to do anything with it right now.

Update About:Buster
  • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
  • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
  • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
  • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
  • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update" then click the X to close that window.
  • Now close About:Buster
Update CWShredder
  • Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
  • Click Check For Update
  • Close CWShredder
Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please run about:buster by RubbeRDuckY:
  • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
  • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
  • It will begin to check your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I may need a copy of it later.
  • Reboot your computer into safe mode again
Run about:buster again following the same instructions as above, this time without the restart at the end

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Now run CleanUp!. Click CleanUp and allow it to delete all the temporary files.Reboot your computer into normal windows.

Please run an on-line virus scan at Kaspersky OnLine Scan or if that doesnt work, you can use TrendMicro or BitDefender. (Please post the results of the scan(s) in your next reply)

After all that, please post back with how things went as well as the logs requested and a new HiJackThis log.

Good Luck

I did everything you said. CWS found nothing. Trend House Micro online virus and spyware scan found nothing. about:buster found nothing. And yet "Powered by Sonic Update Manager" plagues me still :tazz: although I haven't gotten ole Dr Watson yet, that may be because I'm avoiding right-clicking on anything. Also when I typed "online virus scan" into my IE address bar it went straight to Trend House Micro! I never set it to do that... creepy! Anyway, thank you so much for at least trying to help ;) here is a logfile for your delectation and delight.

OK. Here we go again.

Please follow the instructions provided, you may want to print out these instructions and use them as a reference.

First:
Please download ewido security suite it is a free version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

After this is done please reboot and post the ewido scan log and a new HiJAckThis log. Also let me know how your system is running.

Hi,

My system is running fine. I can't note any difference. There wasn't really a difference before, either, it was just annoying to get the Powered by Sonic pop-up every once in a while and the Dr Watson Debugger Error sometimes upon right-clicking.

ewido actually found things, hoorah! here are scans.

OK lets try this.

[*]Please set your system to show
all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

[*]Press Control-Alt-Del to enter the Task Manager.

Click on the Processes tab and end the following processes:

C:\Program Files\Verizon Online\Visual IP InSight\IPClient.exe
Exit the Task Manager when finished.

[*]Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

http://ms101.mysearch.com/sa/srchlft.html
http://ms101.mysearc...sa/srchlft.html
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IPInSightLAN 01] "C:\Program Files\Verizon Online\Visual IP
InSight\IPClient.exe" -l
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [asferror] C:\WINDOWS\System32\asferror.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [winpack] C:\WINDOWS\System32\winpack.exe
c:\windows\system32\adprot.exe (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

[*]Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

C:\Program Files\Verizon Online\Visual IP InSight\IPClient.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\asferror.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\winpack.exe
c:\windows\system32\adprot.exe (file missing)

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look. Also let me know how your system is running.

OK, everything went well until I rebooted into Safe Mode.

I was able to delete C:\Program Files\Verizon Online\Visual IP InSight\IPClient.exe without a problem,

but I wasn't able to locate asferror.exe OR winpack.exe OR adprot.exe -- they just weren't in the C:\WINDOWS\system32\ folder.

There was an asferror.dll file, but you didn't tell me to erase that, so I didn't.

Computer's running fine so far, but I've only just restarted it.

here is the HijackThis log.
