Well, Its been 4 days minus an hour since my computer was officially infected with the stupid Nail.exe/DrPMon.dll whatever it feels like calling itself. Ewido is still popping up occasionally saying it found a bad .dll. They just keep comming. Well, we've scanned with Ad-aware originally which seemed to set it off. Then Spybot S&D, and CWShredder. My dad renamed a few files which seemed to keep it from starting when we logged on; Ewido also blocks a few from starting. It seems the problem is sortof dormant - Like cancer thats comming back to life. I followed your sticky and ran all the programs - CleanUp! cleaned out 1.41GB of junk thats built up over the years.

I'm running Windows XP Pro SP2 (It's the most up to date one) with a 1.4Ghtz processor.

Here is my Hijack This log:

I'm sorry Excal for not seeing this post until today. I have been having trouble even getting the computer to run and it keeps "degrading". We have made emergency backups to an external harddrive. Today my personal account on the computer stopped working (won't finish starting windows without getting stuck in some sort of uninterrubtible - sorry for the bad spelling - loop). Because of the horrible shape of the computer, I posted a new thread because the search feature wasn't working and I couldn't find my old thread. The thread can be found here: http://www.geekstogo...log-t46090.html .

I apoligize for the mixup and "double post" - Is there a way I can remove this thread to avoid future confusion?

Thankyou for spending time helping out and sorry again for the confusion!

Hi Heide,

I merged the two posts ;) No worries :tazz:

I can see that you have some malware issues. This maybe a few step process in removing it. I encourage you to stick with it and follow my directions as closely as possible so as to avoid complicating the problem further.

DOWNLOAD PROGRAMS

Please download ewido security suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates Do NOT run a scan yet. (if you already have, please just update)

Please download Nailfix from Here
click nailfix.exe and choose install, a new folder will be created on your desktop named nailfix
please do NOT run it yet.

Download and install CleanUp! Here*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.
We will use this program later.

Thanks for merging the posts firstoff!

A couple questions before I go about this procedure. We already have the demo of Ewido installed, but I beleive background check is on, but not sure. Realtime proctection is checked. Let me know if this is a problem or how to fix it.

Also, my dad has made a couple attempts at fixing this thing. I beleive he renamed the Nail.exe to another name because he couldn't delete it. It comes up with an error when I log on about it. Should I rename this file back to Nail.exe?

Already have and ran CleanUp! Deleted 1.4Gb of stuff, I guess it built up just a tad bit.

I am going to wait to hear your response on these topics before I go about trying and then having to redo it.

Once again, Thanks for your time and I really appreciate it!

No Problem ;)

Any kind of real time protection you want to disable it for the fix. The majority of the time you can right click on the ICON near your computer clock and find the option to disable, or just shut it completely off. Ewido shouldn't be a problem, we will be using that as one of the first things in safe mode. Just make sure you close the program out completely.

You should rename it back to what it was, so the nail.cmd will recongnize it.

Already have and ran CleanUp! Deleted 1.4Gb of stuff, I guess it built up just a tad bit.

Should run clean up again when asked, never hurts ;)

Once again, Thanks for your time and I really appreciate it!

Sorry, where should this "Nail.exe" be located? in the SYSTEM32 folder? The only one I found was under the Spybot S&D directory in a .zip. Would that be quarantine or is that it?

OK, well, I think I have a problem. My dad is not certain what happened to the Nail.exe file. When he renames a file, he only changes the extension to .old. He said he might have deleted it when he was in safe mode but isn't sure. Could Spybot S&D have picked it up and quarantined it (and therefore be in the .zip file)?

I searched the computer using the normal windows search making sure all the options were checked (system files, hidden files, ect) for Nail.exe and the .dll he "fixed" called AUNPS2.dll. Both are gone. There is an error box when windows logs on saying the can't find them.

I doubt they are fully gone, any suggestions? Sorry for the wierd situation, we didn't really search for help until we realized we're messing with something pretty nasty.

Should I go ahead and try what was suggested minus the nailfix.exe part and then go about and post the logs and see if it is there or not?

Thanks!

Well, I did everything listed. The ActiveScan kept randomly shutting off, don't know why. This time it found one and about 200,000 files later it randomly closed. I did all the steps listed, here are all the notes I took and what step # they were under...

4.)The SvcProc was already stopped. Didn't think this was a problem, but just for the sake of completion I'm going to list all the differences I ran into.

5.)wfwxaf.exe didn't exist

6.)When I ran nail.exe it asked if it is OK to start in safe mode - nothing big, just clicked yes.

10.)023 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc)... wasn't present.

12/13.)Virtual Bouncer not present.

14.)Could only find and delete C:/WINDOWS/cfgmgr52.dll. The others didn't exist.

15.)First time I ran it when I left for work and came back to a windows XP log on screen. I don't have my computer set to go back to log on after screen saver and have hybernation turned off. Second time I ran it, it shut off after about 550,000 files, the bar only showed it being half way. Said it found one, but I doubt it fixed it. Something seems to be blocking it yet.

Computer seems to be running so so. When I went to this site through my bookmarks the first time I got bombed with popups followed by an illegal operation of some sort and the whole thing closed. This time it seems to be working.

Thanks for all your help so far! Hopefully we can get this thing out of here or at least delay it long enough to make good backups in a reasonable amount of time. We plan on reformating after this gets cleared up and good backups are made. It is one of the first P4s made with the 1.4Ghz - It originally had Win ME on it and we upgraded, so there are some errors there. A clean start would really help, but not quite yet. Thanks!

You may have the latest version of VX2. Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:
  • One
    Two
  • Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe.
  • Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.
  • From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter
  • Press any key to reboot your computer.
  • After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log.
  • Copy the contents of log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log, and we'll clean up what's left. :tazz:
IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!
