Very Nice!

1. Close all browsers, windows and unneeded programs.

2. Open HiJack and do a scan.

3. Put a Check next to the following items:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O2 - BHO: AuroraHandlerObj Class - {4AA870AC-8427-42a4-B92E-ECD956197489} - C:\WINDOWS\AuroraHandler.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: Act.UI.InternetExplorer.Plugins.AttachFile.CAttachFile - {D5233FCD-D258-4903-89B8-FB1568E7413D} - mscoree.dll (file missing)
O9 - Extra button: Attach Web page to ACT! contact - {6F431AC3-364A-478b-BBDB-89C7CE1B18F6} - mscoree.dll (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Attach Web page to ACT! contact... - {6F431AC3-364A-478b-BBDB-89C7CE1B18F6} - mscoree.dll (file missing)

4. click the Fix Checked box

5. Reboot

6. please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

7. If activescan doesn't work, we will try this:

Download Escan: http://www.mwti.net/...e_utilities.asp
Better to disable your own virusscanner while performing the next scan.

In scan-options, check everything.
also, scan all files
When done, click scan.

When the scan is done, you'll get an option to make a log. You'll get a long log.
Open that log and copy and paste all the lines/files where it says 'infected' in your next reply.

Don't copy and paste the lines from infected files that are present in recovery or backupfolders from antispywarescanner (eg adaware, spybot s&d) or your virusscanner. Those I don't need.
I don't need the infected files/lines that are present in your System Volume Information-folder.

8. Please post the Active scan log (or Escan)and a fresh HiJackThis log. Let me know how your computer is running.

OK, Steps 1-5 were no problem. I didn't have to be in safe mode, did I? I was having problems with ActiveScan still, so I ran the EScan. Program seems a little "rough around the edges" but seemed to scan well. Is there any way to move the Error!!!s over easier than ctrl + f and search for error and copy all 132 over minus the quarantined/system volume ones? I'll post a HJT log now and work on copying the ones I find over.

One thing I noticed is the EScan said it scanned 152,540 files, but I know I have well over that on my computer. I set all the settings as instructed.

Anyways, here is an updated HJT log:

I started to copy them over, but I can't tell clearly which ones are to be copied and which ones are not. It will take me several hours if I am to copy them over individually as I was, any other way around it? With windows XP seemingly randomly logging off, or IE randomly closing (gotta love that part :tazz: ) I don't want to risk copying all of them over and then losing the list in here.

Thanks for your help, let me know what I should do about this.

I'm going to post it as an attachment if that is ok due to it's extreme length. Just let me know if you want me to post it in the thread instead.

I know it logged off one night while the ActiveScan was running. Last night I had this thread open and was just hitting refresh every 20 minutes or so (playing Ninja Gaidien - great game - to kill some time) to check for replys. When I looked back the log on screen was there.

I'm sorry for taking so long to reply. I went camping with my girlfriend over the weekend and got "caught off gaurd" and had to scamble to get ready. The text file for the EScan itself is too big to attach or copy and paste - my computer just gets stuck in some type of loop. My dad said he has been working on the computer (don't know if its good or bad, seems to be running somewhat smooth like it was before the weekend), so I figure I'll post a HJT log just to see if theres anything visible on that.

HJT log as of 6/24:

Seems to be running pretty smooth. Is it safe to run Ad-aware and all those programs again? I don't see any problems right off of the bat, could you leave this thread open for a little bit incase I notice something? I'll reply in a week or so when I'll be able to tell for sure or not whether it's clean.

Thanks for all your help!

Ok, i will leave it open. U sure can run keep running adaware ;)

here are some others:

Great job, it appears your computer is clean :tazz:

Ensure you rehide your “hidden files and folders” back to the way they were.

Now that your system is Malware Free, it is important to reset your system Restore. Click Here to learn how to.

Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs, if you don't already have them, for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE
Spybot S&D
Microsoft Anti-Spyware

If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest one of these free programs:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

AVG
Avast
AntiVir

The following free programs are great for prevention:

SpywareBlaster 3.4
Spywareguard
IE/Spyad

A Firewall is a must! Here are 3 good free versions:
(do not have more than one firewall running on your system)

Sygate
Kerio
ZoneLabs

There are other options other than Internet Explorer for a browser, which some say have better security. Two of them are:

Firefox
Opera

If you decide to keep Internet Explorer, This site is a great source for tightening up security on It's settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided. Also read How I got Infected

Thanks, a couple opinion questions,

We have all three spyware programs you listed (Ad-aware, Spybot, and MS AS). We like Norton as virus protection system, it has done very well and I'm very pleased with it.

About the "prevention" softwares... What do you think about Microsoft Anti-Spyware's protection option? We have it running, would you recommend switching and only using it as a scanner?

Also, I read the how I got infected link, but couldn't really find anything. Is this "spyware" different than most? I don't remember ever downloading anything, I'm usually very, very cautious about downloads in general. I've gotten spyware before, but nothing like this. Any idea that could have caused it other than the ordinary? Is this one just particularly easy to stumble upon?

Thanks again for all your help, everything seems to be running great so far!

I very much like the MSAS realtime protection. I use it on my own computer.

There are so many ways to get spyware on your computer. Going to a bad site. Opening an email. Downloading a program. If they want to get you, they can. But using the programs I suggested significantly decreases your chances of getting something bad. I would certainly use FireFox instead of IE, just for the very fact that most bad guys target IE.

The programs you have a very good for detection, you should have something for prevention. SpywareBlaster and if you are going to contiune using IE, IE/SPYAD.

Hope I answered your questions ;)

Thanks,

:tazz:
