Hello,

I have been having a problem with my computer for almost 2 weeks. The computer works alright, but sometimes when a media file is clicked on one of the following errors comes up: 1. Dr Watson Post Mortem Debugger has encountered... needs to close or 2. The System has recovered from a serious error or 3. Generic Host Process for Win32 Services encountered a problem and needed to close. The computer freezes and I have to reboot it. Also I have seen a blue screen that said Windows was shutdown to protect files. At first I thought it was spyware or a virus, but I have Microsoft Antispyware, and Norton Antivirus. I have run those and found nothing. I have also installed a couple more Antispyware programs and they too never found anything. I am hoping someone would be kind enough to help me :tazz: . I am not too good with computer troubleshooting. Thank You for your time and effort.

Please Click here!, and follow the recommendations in the guide.

If you're still having trouble, We'll need you to use a free diagnostic tool, Hijack This. Follow the instructions in step five of this guide, and reply here with your log.

Most of what Hijack This lists lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT delete or modify anything yet! Someone will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results.

Thanks for replying. I am pretty sure you guys were swamped. Anyways, I was still trying to fix my computer (to no avail I am afraid). I looked at the forums suggested antivirus scanners and antispyware/trojan. I tried a lot of these. Most found nothing. I used TrojanHunter and it found a trojan: Worm-P2P.SDDrop (description: spread through peer-to-peer programs in my case iMesh). It got rid of it. Yet the problem still persists. I followed the required steps before posting a HijackThis Log, being unfamiliar with it I hope I did it correctly. Thanks for your time and help. So now I will post my HijackThis Log:

Hi,

I think I may have made a mistake with using HijackThis and posting the Log. I read somewhere on the forum that maybe I needed to include hidden files before the scan (I haven't done that and don't know how). Maybe that is why you haven't seen anything wrong with my log. The malware is elusive and probably attatched itself to legit files. I have tried a lot of antivirus/spyware/trojan programs and haven't been successful to diagnose the problem. But I am pretty sure something is amiss with my computer. The computer runs fine most of the time, but I have noticed lately that my CPU Usage is very high (sometimes as high as 100%) with no programs running (I have disabled them). Also, there is a load of 90% on my memory. I don't understand, I am not even running any programs (those that hog CPU and Memory like p2p applications). I have tried the free online scans recommended two found nothing, but Panda Activescan found:
Adware:adware/sqwire

Located: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\APP MANAGEMENT\ARPCACHE\TSA
I am not to good with editing the registry so I cannot delete these changes to the registry. I, however, do not think the problem is merely this adware problem. I think it is a worm. If you could suggest some other tools to get rid of these nasty buggers I would appreciate it. I will be most grateful if you can assist me in getting rid of this problem.

Thank You

Have you disabled anything in MSConfig? If you have, re-enable them then post a new HiJackthis log.

Tell me exactly whats going on with your computer.

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as fixme.reg (make sure that Save as Type is set at "All Files") on your Desktop. Ensure there is no space at above REGEDIT 4.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\APP MANAGEMENT\ARPCACHE\TSA]

Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?". Answer "Yes" and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully".
  • Please click this link to download Silent Runners.
  • Save it to the desktop.
  • Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
  • You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done yet, just let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once you receive the prompt "All Done!", double-click on the new text file on the desktop and copy that entire log and paste it here.

  • NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.
For some time it will look like nothing is happening. Just keep waiting.
  • Once it's done it will create a log. A window will come up telling you when it's saved. Please post that log here

Hi there, sorry about the wait. I have been trying to ascertain what is wrong with my computer. I tried some more antispyware and other applications but to no avail. It seems this problem is affecting my log-in only (I have Windows XP). The problem doesn't affect my brother's log-in. It seems the problem has become worse. Before, it only happened when I open certain files or programs, but now I'm in the middle of surfin' the net and the computer just freezes, sometimes it shows me a blue screen (Windows was shutdown to prevent your files from...). Ctrl/Alt/Delete doesn't work, only by touching the power button can I resume to use the computer. After I reboot I get a message from Microsoft saying the system has recovered from a serious error, and it lists two files included in the error report: C:\DOCUME~1\Abdullah\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERbeca.dir00\Mini081005-01.dmp
C:\DOCUME~1\Abdullah\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERbeca.dir00\sysdata.xml

I did a search for these files so I can manually delete them, but I couldn't find them. I have also defragmented, ran Disk Cleanup, deleted temp files, cookies, etc., ran CleanUp, and other recommended applications.

I will now post a new HijackThis Log:

I also have the Silent Runners log you asked for. During the running of it I received a warning from Norton Antivirus about a malicious script, but I allowed the script to run per your instructions. It's no problem right? And also how do I get rid of it after I have used? I would also like to know about the fixme.reg thingy you told me to do. I did, so did it fix the registry or what? Sorry about all the questions and the length of this post.

Here is the Silent Runners Log:

Hi, I am the administrator so if you couldn't find something wrong in my end I am sure it's the same in my brothers log-in. I would like to ask you 2 questions please.
1. When you told me to do the fixme.reg thing and merge it with the registry, what exactly did that do?
2. Can I delete the fixme.reg file and the Silent Runners?

Thank You For your help

The reason I want to see your brothers log is to compare it to yours. You say he isn't having any trouble, so maybe we can narrow it down on what the problems is.

Yes you can delete silentrunners and fixme.

Fixme.reg deleted that registry key that activescan found.

Hi I was observing my computer for the past few days and I had no problems. But then when I thought thank God and the person who helped me (you Excal) it happened again. I had the problem, only now it is worse. After I removed the registry key Activescan had found, the computer was stable for a while. So I thought give it a couple of more days just to make sure. But, today the computer just froze. And I had to reboot it. I have never experienced this problem before. It is a major headache. These are the symptoms of my computer: When I try running the error checking tool on my volume or the defragmentation tool, the computer freezes and a blue screen comes saying: Windows shutdown to prevent damage to files etc. Now I have run a lot of antivirus/antispyware/antitrojan etc. applications to no avail.

I will now post a HijackThis log:

Also, I ran Activescan and it found no viruses, but it found a suspicious file that may be a virus: C:\WINDOWS\Temp\ASHeuristic\autoupdate.dll.vir

I don't know what this file is or how to remove it. Feedback will be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the trouble and thank you for your help. I appreciate it.

Hi,

Your log looks clean, maybe be either a hardware issue.
As far as that file goes....its a temp file, so if you run CleanUp! it should be gone.

I would suggest that you consider posting a thread in this forum:

http://www.geekstogo...2003-NT-f5.html

explain your problem and the experts there maybe able to help you.

Hi Excal,

I thought the problem could be a hardware issue also too. I will take your advice now. I'd just like to express my gratitude for all your help. Thanks a bunch. The geeks that run this site are great people for helping people like me (I don't know jack about computers :tazz: ). Thanks a lot. I think this thread should be locked now.
Have a nice day/evening depending on where in the world you are.

PEACE
