Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR PROMPT HELP, IM IN TEARS OVER THIS!

I am unable to connect to the internet via the infected computer, and could not install ewido as the file size is too large to fit on a disk. I was able to transfer and install smitRem, attached please find the txt it generated. I have adaware on my computer and run it daily, unfortunately it did not find any files to quarantine. If there is any additional information I can provide to end this menace, I will be sitting by the monitor clicking refresh.

Thank you again for your help,

Thank you very much; also, if you could please let me know how long this takes you at the end, I would appreciate it.

When I run the smitRem program, in the middle of execution (Abort, Retry Fail?)
came up twice; I tried retry then suggested abort.

Once again, I can't thank you enough. My boss is not pleased with me as it is, and this would delay my work in a way that would give him ample cause. You're doing more than saving my computer, you're saving my job.

Hi arap,

There are times when the infection is taken out by one run of the tool and there are times when we have to find the root cause of why the tool is failing (which is susuaally another infection interfering). So it could be fixed in a ziffy or could take some time.

Lets try it the manual way -

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Please RIGHT-CLICK: HERE and go to Save As (in Internet Explorer it's "Save Target As") in order to download Grinler's reg file. Save it to your desktop.

Locate "smitfraud.reg" on your desktop and double-click it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry, click YES. Wait for the "merged successfully" prompt then follow the rest of the instructions below.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following programs, if found:

Security IGuard
Virtual Maid
Search Maid
PSGuard
AdwareDelete

Exit Add/Remove Programs.

*IMPORTANT*CLICK THIS LINK TO LEARN HOW TO VIEW HIDDEN FILES

* Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

* Save it to your desktop.

* Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.

* Select "Delete on Reboot".

* Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C

C:\wp.exe
C:\wp.bmp
C:\bsw.exe
C:\Windows\sites.ini
C:\Windows\wp.bmp
C:\Windows\uninstIU.exe
C:\Windows\popuper.exe
C:\WINDOWS\zloader3.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSUPD.EXE
C:\Windows\System32\hhk.dll
C:\Windows\System32\wldr.dll
C:\Windows\System32\wp.bmp
C:\Windows\System32\perfcii.ini
C:\Windows\System32\oleadm.dll
C:\Windows\System32\helper.exe
C:\Windows\System32\shnlog.exe
C:\Windows\System32\intmon.exe
C:\Windows\System32\intel32.exe
C:\Windows\System32\intmonp.exe
C:\Windows\System32\msmsgs.exe
C:\Windows\System32\msole32.exe
C:\Windows\System32\ole32vbs.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\oleadm32.dll

* Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

* Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

While your computer is restarting, tap the F8 key continually until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Make sure you can view hidden files.

Using Windows Explorer, delete the following, if found, (please do NOT try to find them by "search" because they will not show up that way)

FOLDERS to delete (in bold) if found:

C:\Program Files\Search Maid
C:\Program Files\Virtual Maid
C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles
C:\Program Files\Security IGuard
C:\Program Files\PSGuard
C:\Program Files\AdwareDelete

While still in Safe Mode, do the following:

Make sure all programs and windows are closed. Run HiJackThis and place a check next to the following items, if found, then click FIX CHECKED:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SysUpd] C:\WINDOWS\SYSUPD.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

Hi arap,

Thats great news !!!!!!!! Your HJT log is good.

Panda scan showed that a critical file - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WININET.DLL was infected.

Please upload the file at http://virusscan.jotti.org/ and get the file scanned.

Post back the scan report here. We may have to replace the file if it is still infected !!!!

Hi arap,

Just as I suspected.

Copy the part below into notepad and save it as searchwininet.bat
Set "Save as File" type to "All files"

dir %Systemdrive%\wininet.dll /a h /s > files.txt
start notepad files.txt

Double click the file and when it is ready it will open files.txt
Post the content of that file here

When I clicked the file, it ran but said that there were too many parameters. The text file it generated was blank.

Hi Arap,

Lets try this manually then.

Make sure that the system and hidden files are visible. For more info please visit this Page.

Please open Windows Search window. Please go to advanced options. Make sure that the System folder and hidden files are included in the search.

Search for the file "Wininet.dll".

It will throw up a few instances of it. Please give me details of various folders and the file sizes. I will then tell you which one to copy as replacement of your infected copy.
