Also, I have an issue in which I registered Etrust antivirus some while back but Windows XP Security Center does not recognise it? How can I double check it is actually running? Realtime monitor seems to be ok but I'm just a layman, and besides Eweido picked up so many things that it obviously missed.

Many many thanks in advance for your help and site, much appreciated

Also (as previously stated, don't know if you missed this), I have an issue in which I registered Etrust antivirus some while back but Windows XP Security Center does not recognise it? How can I double check it is actually running? Realtime monitor seems to be ok but I'm just a layman, and besides Eweido picked up so many things that it obviously missed.

Your help is greatly appreciated!

Hi Mark,

I understand your concerns and I havent missed your Queries. Quite a few times, infections would interfere with the normal operation of programs and softwares installed on the PC. So it is best to clean up all infections and then identify remaining issues and address them. I hope you will understand that.

Well I checked up on the Windows Security Center. It has a few interesting things to say -

1. There are some antivirus and firewall solutions that the Security Center does not detect at all.

2. The Security Center can detect the presence of some other firewall or antivirus programs, even if they don't provide information about their status. However, the Security Center can only detect whether or not such a program is installed on your computer; it can't report the status.

3. If you're unsure about the status of your antivirus or firewall solution, or if you receive a Security Center alert that seems incorrect, please check with your antivirus or firewall vendor to find out if the software you're running is supported in the Security Center.

4. If your computer is part of a domain (a group of computers on a network), your security settings are typically managed by your network administrator. In this case, the Security Center does not display your security status or send alerts.

5. To specify that you are using an antivirus program that Windows does not find:

To open the Security Center, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Security Center. In the Security Center, under Virus Protection, click Recommendations. In the Recommendations dialog box, select the I have antivirus software that I'll monitor myself check box, and then click OK. (Note the recommendations button is not available if the Virus setting is "ON").

However I should add that Computer Associates is a big name in anti-virus software and is one of the partner sites for Microsoft. So it should be identified. Check the recommendations button and see if it helps you.

To check whether your AV product is running (It was running when the HJT log was taken !!!), it should be displaying an icon in the system tray (next to the time display on the bottom right hand corner of the screen). Click on it and check whether the settings are set for it to run at Startup.

Let me know how it goes !!! Otherwise I will think of something else.

BTW, I forgot to include one item for fixing earlier -

Run Hijack This and click on scan. The following items need to be fixed -

O2 - BHO: AuroraHandlerObj Class - {4AA870AC-8427-42a4-B92E-ECD956197489} - C:\WINDOWS\AuroraHandler.dll (file missing)

Close all windows other than Hijack This. Check the boxes next to above items and click on Fix checked.

Reboot the PC and post a fresh HJT log here

Thanks for the advice. Yes the system tray has always had Etrust running which worried me a little considering the security centre recognised it last year, but not since I bought the online update this year. But it's no big deal, seeing how many things it's missed through Ewido and Panda has taught me not to really on one anti-virus solution now!

Deleted the instructed..with the previous files missing in the Windows\System 32 folder, is that a cause for concern?

Hi Mark,

Chances are that fixing the netries in HJT took care of the files in system32 folder !!!

Lets try one more thing for the AOL issue -

1. Click on Start ----> Settings ----> Network Connections. Locate the item which connect you to the internet. Right click on this item and let Windows "repair the connection".

2. Start > Run > cmd
sfc /scannow
There will be a prompt for the XP cd
sfc - system file checker, retrieves the correct version of the file from %Systemroot%\System32\Dllcache or the Windows installation source files, and then replaces the incorrect file.

If you want to see what was replaced, right click My Computer > manage, expand event viewer > system.

System File Checker (sfc)
Scans and verifies the versions of all protected system files after you restart your computer.

Let me know how it goes and how your connection is now !!!
