I am getting a blue screen with a black box in the middle of it that says "Critical Warning! System has been stopped due to a serious malfunction. Spyware activity has been detected. It is recommended to use spyware removal tool to prevent data loss. Do not use the computer before all spyware removed." It has also added an icon to my desktop that has a picture of a girl and says "Free XXX" under it. I have followed all the steps this website has suggested before posting on the forum, but I dont think that it has helped. Could you please help me fix this? Also, I have never tried to fix anything on my computer before, so please explain what it is your wanting me to do. Thanks!!
Summer

Hi Summer 24 and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

1. If you haven't logged in go to Geeks to Go and do so. Then proceed to item a.

If you already have logged in, go directly to item a.

a. Click on My Controls at the top right hand corner of the window.
b. In the left hand column, click "View Topics"
c. If you click on the title of your post, you will be taken there

2. Also, while at the My Controls page, check the box to the right of your post and then scroll down.
.Where it says "unsubscribe" click the pull-down menu and select "immediate email notification"

3. Please DELETE your current HJT program from its present location.

4. Download and run the following HijackThis autoinstall program from Here HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

A. Close ALL windows except HJT

B. SCAN with HJT and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')

C. POST the log in this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

Regards,

Trevuren

There are unfortunately other infections that we must kill before we can get to your "main" problem.

You have the latest version of VX2.

Download L2mfix from this location:

http://www.downloads....org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Trevuren

Ok, I am really lost on these last instructions. I clicked on the link and saved it to my desktop, but the file was just named 12mfix...there was no .exe on the end of it. I did agree to terms and install stuff, but there was never a file named 12mfix.bat that I could find. Could you please tell me what Im doing wrong? Thanks,
Summer

You did absolutely nothing wrong as far as I can see. They came out with a new version yesterday and the operating instructions are just catching up. Here is the Post all over again. This one is supposed to work with this new version. I haven't retouched this one iota. It is fresh off the press. (Edit: I added my name at the end)

1. You have already downloaded a program to your desktop which is represented by an icon that looks like a box of books titled "l2mfix.exe"

2. Click on that l2mfix.exe icon then click on RUN

3. Now, click Accept>>Install and choose your desktop as the destination. This will create a folder on your Desktop called l2mfix.

4. Open the l2m folder and click l2mfix.bat

5. A black command box appears in a windows which prompts you to "Press any key to continue".... Press any Key.

6. A green command box appears with six options too choose from. Choose Option #1 by typing 1, then click ENTER.

7. After a few seconds, the program will produce a Notepad log. Copy the contents of this log and Paste it into this thread for review.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option # 2 or any other files from the l2mfix folder until so directed by me.

Regards,

Trevuren

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Ok I did it, but when I rebooted all of my icons and my desktop are both still there. Did I do something wrong?

You did fine. Stop worrying. We are now going to do a general cleanup just so we can see what is left.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:

Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
*choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
*uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
*Close the window with ok
*All hidden files will now be visible

Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window and Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

*Restart the computer.
*as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
*Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
*press Enter.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if they are present):

D:\WINDOWS\TEMP\5ZoHEWw6.exe
D:\WINDOWS\System32\qwmnsa.dll
D:\WINDOWS\system32\pkoa.dll
D:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools<===Folder

C:\winstall.exe
D:\WINDOWS\System32\win32.exe
D:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\drct16.dll
systemp.dll<=== Search for this one
wngff32.dll<===Folder

Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now.

Ok, so I checked for all the items you asked me to but i was only able to find D:\WINDOWS\System32\Services\{F51B2D97-1DC1-4B8D-BA2734592858C9F9, which i deleted and i found D:\WINDOWS\System32\drct16.dll (but got an error message that said cannot delete, its being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again...but nothing was opened?) and i was not able to find D:\WINDOWS\System32\win32.exe...but i found some things similar: win32, win32K, and win32spl.dll (I did not do anything to these because it did not have the exact program listed that I was looking for that you told me to. But just thought this info might help. Should I have found more of the items that were on the list? I may have delted D:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools but im not sure because i searched for it through the Run menu and it took me to a blank screen and i clicked the red delete button, but it did nothing. I looked in my trashcan box and it said the file was in it, so I cant tell you for sure if I deleted it or not.
Also, when I rebooted back in normal mode I got a message from Norton AntiVirus that said it has detected a virus on my computer (D:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRCT16.DLL also called Backdoor.Haxdoor.D and said it was unable to repair this file).
Sorry this message is so confusing, I got a little confused during these steps and wanted to make sure I let you know everything I could remember.

Ok so Im trying to disable the service you told me to and after i click on it to stop it scans about half way across and then slows down and finally says that it "could not stop the websearch toolbar support nt service service on local computer. Error 1053: the service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion."

Im going to attempt to do the rest of the stuff you asked me to do since I cant get this done.
