Hello and welcome. First of all, could you please check that you are currently receiving an email notification about answers to this thread? If not, please click on the "Options" - button next to the "Add Reply", then hit on "Track this Topic".

Be sure to ask any questions before proceeding the fix & if you cannot for some reason finish a step, please move on to the next step and let me know in your next reply if you had troubles with something.

Please print these instructions out, or write them down, as you can't read them during the fix. This will be a long process, so please stick with it and be sure to follow every step.

Ok, let's get started. First, if you have the following programs, please uninstall them, then delete the folders of them. Empty your recycle bin and continue to follow the instructions. This is because you might have an old version running.

Please download and install the following programs;Run the CleanUp installer and get the program ready to be used, but don't run it yet.¨

When you have installed Ewido, update it's definitions but don't run a scan yet!

Install Ad-aware SE, but don't run it's scan yet either. Get it ready to be used.

Now, run at least tree of the following free online scans;Then run the following free trojan scanner;Do the following;

1. Click on the "Start" button in the lower-left corner of your screen and choose "Control Panel".

2. Choose "Add or Remove Programs" in your Control Panel. A list of all your installed programs will pop up.

3. Select "Messenger Plus! 3" in the software list and click the "Change/Remove" button.

4. You will be asked what you want to remove when you have installed Messenger Plus! with the optional sponsor. Choose to uninstall both of them.

5. When you uninstall Plus! you are asked if you want to keep your settings and/or Plus! plugins in case you want to re-install Plus!. Uncheck the boxes in front of the options to keep it.

6. Press "Uninstall" to remove Messenger Plus! Messenger will be shutdown.

7. An additional window will pop up when you chose to uninstall the sponsor program. Type over the verification code in the empty box and press "UNINSTALL" to completely remove the sponsor program.

8. The uninstall procedure is complete, press "Close" when you're done.

Important: Some files locked by the system will not be deleted until you restart your PC.

When you are at this point, don't reboot yet. Please launch Ad-aware SE, click on the world globe at the top of the window. Click on "Connect", "Ok", "Finish".
Make sure you take the definitions file if there is one available. Click on "Start", "Perform Full System Scan". (Note, deselect the option to Search for negligible risk entries) Be sure to select the option to "Search for low-risk threats". Hit "Next". Close any other open windows. Let Ad-aware do the scan for you. Once it finishes, click "Next", and go to the "Scan Summary tab". Check any objects it might have found for removal. Click Next, click Ok. Reboot!!

Boot up into Safe Mode. Disconnect from the internet {for broadband/cable users, it is recommended to disconnect the cable connection}

While rebooting, tap F8 until your computer shows an menu. Select Safe Mode.

Run HiJackThis;

1. Click "Open the Misc Tools Section"
2. Click "Open Process manager"

-

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following;

C:\WINDOWS\system32\FhuJr5.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\OkrN0Z44.exe

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

Next, close the Process Manager. Run a scan with HiJackThis. Check the following objects for removal if present;

C:\WINDOWS\system32\richup.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\Malprg9.exe
C:\Program Files\PartyPoker\ <= Entire Folder
C:\WINDOWS\system32\FhuJr5.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\OkrN0Z44.exe

After this, run a Full Scan in Ewido Security Suite. Make sure you have only Ewido running at that time. Let it remove everything & save the log it produces!

Once it has finished, and you have cleaned what it found,
please run CleanUp! making sure reboot your PC once it's finished. Boot up into normal mode,
run a new scan with HiJackThis, and connect back to the internet once it's finished so that you can post the fresh log here along with the log from Ewido.

Thanks for completing that whole step, things look a lot better now! ;)

Let's take a look at this then

Please download Trend Micro™ Anti-Spyware for the Web Utility (by clicking the "Scan and Clean your PC" button).
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click the new icon on your desktop (tmas-web-scan.exe)
  • It will say "Loading TrendMicro definitions".
  • Once the definitions are loaded, the program will appear to close then re-open.
  • Click "Start Scan"
  • After it's done scanning, click "Scan Results"
  • Make sure all items found have a check next to them, then click "Clean Threats Now".
  • Click Exit.
Reboot your computer. In place of the TrendMicro icon will be a text file called "Antispyware.log", please double-click that log and copy the entire contents and paste them here.

Done the scan, no results were turned up, which must be a good thing.

One final thing...after rebooting after the whole long process, the appearance of my OS has changed back to classic mode, rather than XP which i much prefer. I have tried going through Desktop>Properties>Appearance> and switching it from classic to XP, but the XP selection has been removed. Is there any way of getting that back?

Thanks!!

Hi again!

Download the Luna theme at
http://users.pandora...patchy/luna.zip

Unzip it (right click the luna.zip and select extract all) and MOVE the luna.msstyles which is present in that folder you unzipped to, to this folder: C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\Luna

Don't move it to anywhere else other than that folder!

REBOOT!!

You should now be able to change your Windows XP style. ;)

Post back how it went & tell how's your PC behaving now.

You're most welcome, glad to help!! ;)

I want to give you good protection for future - here's some great tools to check out!

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program <= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall <= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser <= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice;
So how did I get infected in the first place?

As an addition to those, just keep your Windows Updates up-to-date, then you should be good to go.

If you have any further problems/you notice same symptoms on your machine as earlier, please then let me know and post a fresh HJT log. If everything is running fine, you might want to uninstall HJT from your PC!
