win 98 reinstall won't let me connect

due to numerous virus' - i reinstalled win 98 se on my computer. all reinstalls went well - but now it will not recognize my 2 wire home portal for internet connection. everytime i try to open an internet connection, it says 'illegal operation' and wants to send report, and shuts down. i have uninstalled and reinstalled my sbc dsl repeatedly, but still cannot find out what the problem is. i have even ran the reinstall on the ethernet cable adapter, to no avail --------

any help would be appreciated!!
