Hello and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Kat, and I will be helping you get your computer fixed back up and on the go! You should either print these instructions, or save them to a Notepad file on your desktop. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, and you will be unable to access the internet at that time!

You have several different infections. I am going to tackle them a few at a time. This makes it easier on you, and helps me to ensure I dont miss anything. :tazz:

1. First, we need to remove the peper trojan. Download this file, run, and let terminate (it'll just blink briefly on your screen and won't appeared to have done much--this is normal):

Peper Removal Tool

2. Please download CleanUp! and run it to remove any leftover remnants of infection. Click the CleanUp button, and let it scan and select any files it needs to remove. Once it is done, exit the program.

3. Please download ewido security suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Reboot into SAFE MODE . Do this by repeatedly tapping the F8 key as the computer begins to boot up. You will be taken to a screen where you can use your keyboard "arrow" keys to move the cursor and highlight "Safe Mode", then click the "enter" button.
  • Once in Safe Mode, you are going to run Ewido as follows. It is VERY IMPORTANT that you do not "multi task" while Ewido runs. Please do not open/run ANYTHING else during the scan...this includes all files, programs, folders, games, etc. ONLY have Ewido running.
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.

4. Reboot normally

5. Generate StartupList log:
  • Open HijackThis.
  • Click on "Open Misc Tools Section"
  • Make sure that both boxes beside "Generate StartupList Log" are checked:
  • Check BOTH List all minor sections(Full) and List Empty Sections (complete)
  • Click "Generate StartupList Log".
  • Click "Yes" at the prompt
It will produce a NotePad Page. Save this page to your desktop as well.

6. After you have done the above, please make a reply to this thread using the "Add Reply" button. In your reply, I need the following:
  • New HijackThis log
  • Copy of the Ewido report
  • HJT StartupList report

Hello again! Let's get to work, shall we? :tazz:

1. First, please be sure you can view Hidden Files and Folders:
· Click Start.
· Open My Computer.
· Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
· Select the View Tab.
· Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
· Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
· Click Yes to confirm.
· Click OK.

2. Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Hi Jamie! ;) That log is looking pretty good! :tazz:

OPen HijackThis and scan for a log. Place a check next to the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Dsi] C:\WINDOWS\System32\dp-him.exe

Be sure all other programs and windows are closed, then click the "Fix Selected" button.

Reboot into Safe Mode and delete the following file:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\dp-him.exe

Reboot normally and post a fresh HJT log here for me to take a look at. Let me know how things are running now!! ;)

You're welcome! Glad things are running ok now! ;)

Congratulations! Your log is now clean! :tazz:

Here are some items that you will want to add to your to-do list:

These are some tips to reduce the potential for Spyware/Adware/Virus infection in the future:
I would strongly recommend reviewing and installing the following applications if you dont currently have them running on your system:

Use Anti-Virus Software
It is very important that your computer has Anti-Virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.
See this link for a listing of some online and stand-alone Anti-Virus programs:
Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

Update your AntiVirus Software
It is imperitive that you update your Anti-Virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your Anti-Virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall
I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Understanding and Using Firewalls

Spyware/Adware Detection and Removal Programs:
Understanding Spyware, Browser Hijackers, and DialersAd-Aware SEIf you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to setup and use Ad-Aware SE
How to use Ad-Aware SE to remove Spyware
Spybot S&DIf you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to setup and use Spybot S&D
How to use Spybot to remove Spyware
I strongly recommend using both of these programs to catch most spyware/adware

Prevention Programs:
  • SpywareBlaster -- SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • SpywareGuard -- SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad -- IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts File -- The MVPS Hosts File replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
  • Google Toolbar -- Get the free Google Toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other Necessary Programs:
  • A More Secure Browser
Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser.
There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend using Firefox
Be sure to also keep up with Windows and IE updates.

Windows Security and Critical Updates
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Internet Explorer Security and Critical Updates
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.asp

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Update all these Programs Regularly:Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released. Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
