Are you going to reinstall XP, another version of Windows, or a Linux distribution?
I really can't understand why you'd install anything other than XP if you're going to stick with Windows OS. Try a Windows XP Repair Installation, it should fix most any Windows problem.

If you updated from Windows 98 to Windows XP, and you saved your Windows 98 configuration, you may be able to uninstall Windows XP from Add or Remove Programs.
Most likely, you'll have to reformat and reinstall Windows 98--losing all your data. Be sure you have good backups before proceeding.
Another option would be to purchase another copy of Windows XP, and perform a repair installation. This would solve your activation problems, while retaining your data and settings. Repair Windows XP
Format and install Windows 98:
1. Start your computer with a Windows 98 boot disk in the floppy drive.
2. At the command prompt type format c:. When finished reboot with the boot disk in the floppy drive, and the Windows 98 CD in the CD-ROM drive.
3. At the command prompt navigate to the CD-ROM drive (type E:), type setup.
4. Follow the setup prompts.
5. When finished, Windows XP and all your old data/programs will be erased. You'll have a fresh installation of Windows 98 that you'll need to update at Windows Update. You'll also need to apply any needed drivers (video, sound, etc), and reinstall all your programs.

p.s. would u recommend putting on Linux, i do not do much office proccessing, and would just be needing this computer for gaming, work, and music/video
