I have a problem I have seen described elsewhere in this forum: my desktop has been hijacked and now carries the message:

Security Warning
A fatal error in IE has occured at 0028:C0011E36 in VXD VMM(01) + 00010E36. Error was caused by Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c

* System cannot function in normal mode. Please check you security settings.

* Scan your PC with any avaliable antivirus / spyware remover program to fix the problem.

I have run through the suggested sequence of fixes: CleanUp!, Ad-aware SE,

CWShredder, Spybot S&D, Ewido scan, Trend Housecall scan. I downloaded Windows update SP1a. I have also run a couple of McAfee scans, which failed to detect anything wrong, and a Microsoft Antispyware scan, which seemed to fix some other stuff but not this.

The desktop remains hijacked; the only noticeable change in the situation after taking these steps was that a little icon showing a white exclamation mark against a red background disappeared from the task bar. I think it was some kind of link to a virus protection site - legit or not, I don't know.

I then ran a Hijack This scan. The results are immediately below. The Ewido scan log is directly below that.

Can anyone offer any suggestions? Any help gratefully received. :tazz:

:tazz: Thanks for getting back to me. Actually, I think that problem is now solved, but I do have one that I can't seem to fix - perhaps you could advise? I now have an infection of the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\WININET.dlll by W32/Alemod.c.dlll. This was detected by McAfee, which seems unable to get rid of it. I have also tried all of the scans recommended by GtG, and seveal others - Trojan Hunter etc.

Also, I seem to be spending a LOT of time wrestling with these things. Is there anything I could be doing to be better protected ... I am running McAfee Internet Security Suite ver 7 2005. And Ewido. And Microsoft Antispyware. I will switch to Firefox from IE too.

Many thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Please disable Microsoft antispywarte as it may interefere with what we need to do.

Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [AvG] svchost323.exe

Ensure no windows open except HJT and click fix checked

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.
