Take all but one of your memory sticks and see if your pc will still shutdown on it's own.

More interesting would be your temperatures, what kind of computer/motherboard, are you running CPU intensive applicataions, etc.. Have you cleaned off your cooling surfaces recently, and what about your power supply voltages? These are the first things to check for random shut downs.

I have had the same two sticks of ram for about two years now so I don't think that would be the problem. My motherboard is an ASUS A7V333 with an Athlon XP 2100+. THe voltage monitor program that came with my shows some odd spikes in my vcore(dunno what this means). I've included a screenshot of the monitor.I usually do the compressed air route to clean the insides of my computer, any better suggestions? Also thanks for the quick reply.

For the red x's norton disc doctor and the ! would be Userenv and Msiinstaller under applications. Under system for the x's it is print, DCOM, sr and the ! would be dhcp, tcpip, and w32time.

sweet....that's something in XP that basically turns the machine off anytime there is an error...doesn't even have to be a critical error...just poof gone...this might change the shutdown situation. let me know if it does
