Alright.

Lately, my laptop has been taking the liberty of shutting itself off at random times without warning and I haven't a clue why. I'm not doing anything too heavy duty, and it doesn't freeze, it just shuts off and runs a disk check on restart. Now, usually these disk checks don't come up with anything ... well they haven't until now. Most of it is along the lines of. "First allocation unit invalid. *insert filepath* will be truncated." After starting, everything seems to be running fine, but after a while it will shut itself off again. =/ I've tried defragmenting, but it seems to defrag much slower than usual ...

Is this a direct problem with my hard drive? =/ I'm running a virus check and trying to defrag again at the moment, but I'm not sure if it will do any good.

I noticed it seems to use more memory than it used to ... all that I have running is Firefox, AIM, Winamp, Pulse, and IRC, yet its using about half my memory [ running on 256 gb of ram ]

Any thoughts/solutions?

Your log looks clean that's one good thing. I'm not sure on what this could mean... Possibly hard drive failure. I'd start backing up important stuff and moving it to another place just to be safe in case it does go all the way out on you. Keep checking back I'm sure someone else here will know more on this subject than me.

ran another complete defrag and cleaned my hard drive of extra and stray files ... everything seems to be in order at the moment ...

You haven't updated windows in awhile. Have you tried that?

Go to "My Computer" right click your hard drive, and click properties. Click the "tools" tab and click "Check Now" under error checking. That might help.

Did it ... and it seems to be getting better, now it only does it once in a while when Im trying to watch anime ...

Next put your Windows XP installation disk in the drive. Click Start, Run, type "sfc.exe /scannow" without the quotes and click "OK" this is the "system file checker" it will check all your system files against the ones on the disk and replace any missing or corrupted files.

Install Service Pack 1a and then go here:

Download and install all windows updates except service pack 2. Reboot the computer and run some stuff for awhile and let me know how things are doing.
