Hello, and thank you in advance for helping me with this problem.

I keep up with all IE updates, use ad-aware weekly, and for two years have not had problems. While downloading videos this weekend, i downloaded something else...something...more sinister. Now, after using all cleaning tools provided, spyware reappears after each reboot. Audio files dont work (itunes doesnt), and IE runs a little slow.

Below i have posted my HJT log for your kindly review.

Thanks again.

Hi jason_nakal,

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.

First,
Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes
next to all the entries listed below.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Media Gateway] C:\Program Files\Media Gateway\MediaGateway.exe
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
O16 - DPF: {15AD6789-CDB4-47E1-A9DA-992EE8E6BAD6} - http://static.windup...bridge-c420.cab

Now close all windows other than
HiJackThis
, then click Fix Checked. Reboot into
safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting
up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up
where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove
Programs
in the Control Panel(if present):

Media Gateway
180Solutions

Please note any other programs that
you dont recognize in that list in your next
response

Please delete these folders using Windows
Explorer(if present):

C:\Program Files\Media Gateway

After that, Reboot.

Next,
Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

Finally,
Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from ActiveScan. :tazz:

Hello and thank you JasMonkey,

I followed the steps you listed, although i did not get into safe mode on my first reboot, so I rebooted again. Not sure if this matters. I ran the Activescan, although I am not sure what to post, since it did not create a report. It didnt find any infected/ suspicious files, so maybe that is the report.

Suspicious files in my add/ remove search:
1. "Software suite", 451MB. Name seems strangely generic
2. ALPS pointing-device driver

Not sure if either of these are worthy of note.

Below is the HJT log I just ran. Thanks.

Congratulations jason_nakal! Your system is CLEAN :tazz:

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein
