First- what an excellent forum this is! Thanks to all so far.

Kids WIN98 computer was Spysheriffed. I managed to ADAWARE and remove several files that were damaging according to this site. I even downloaded, and ran, in sequence all files, programs, regedits, ... according to the WIN98 process listed here: http://www.geekstogo...ers-t38940.html

I did not have a windows/prefetch directory and a few files listed in that thread were NOT on my PC.

I also ran a HouseCall, and some weird akaig.com (sp) software window popped up- that ain't right. Tried again, this time a Trend s/w window popped up, and I ran the tool. It found 2 MORE spy-wares, I fixed.

I still have the following problems:

1) The desktop icons for My Computer, Recycle Bin and Net Neighborhood are all gone. There is a white box with the flying windows logo inside.

2) When I do a Start, Settings, Control Panel, it takes about 90 seconds to return!

3) When I shutdown, I get a pop-up window that "This programs is not responding...Wait/End", but there is no title as to what program is running!!

4) If I attempt to run a chkdsk, or defrag, or Adaware, or something with some beef, the PC bogs right down afterwards. I have to reboot to get the PC back...

Again, WIN98.

Hello and welcome to Geeks To Go.

Lets start out with some general scans and see if we cant clean things up a little.

+++++ Step 1 +++++

Please run an on-line virus scan at Kaspersky OnLine Scan or if that doesnt work, you can use TrendMicro or BitDefender. (Please post the results of the scan(s) in your next reply)

+++++ Step 2 +++++

Update HiJackThis
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click Open the Misc Tools Section
  • Click Check for update online
+++++ Step 3 +++++

After that, I will need to see two different logs from HiJackThis. The first is the normal log like you posted here. To get the other one, follow these directions.

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Post back with those logs and we can continue from there.

If you have recieved help elsewhere or no longer need our assistance, please let us know.
