  • Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite Here
    • Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files.
    • DO NOT USE IT YET.
    • (if you already have the program, please just update)
  • Download NailFix from HERE to your Desktop.
    • This will leave a Nailfix.exe icon on your Desktop
    • DO NOT USE IT YET
  • Download and install CleanUp! HERE
    *NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.
    DO NOT USE IT YET.

    Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

  • Click HERE to be sure you can view hidden files.

  • ****Ensure you are NOT connected to the internet****.

  • Reboot into safe mode.

    Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode without networking.

  • Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click “Kill process” for each one (If they still exist)

    c:\windows\system32\qsugood.exe

  • Please double-click on the Nailfix.exe icon on your Desktop.
    • Then click Run>>Next>>Finish.
    • Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal. (It is so fast, you may not see it)
  • Now Open and Run Ewido:
    • Click on scanner
    • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    • During the scan when it ask if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK
    • When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
    • Save the report to your desktop
    • Close Ewido
  • Open HiJackThis, click SCAN, put a Checkmark next to the following items:

  • Using Windows Explorer, please DELETE the following files/folders (with all their content), if they are still present. If you have to Search for a file with an incomplete path, please use the Windows Search Function.

  • Run the program CleanUp!

  • Reboot into normal mode and please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

  • Please post an Active scan log , Ewido Scan log and a fresh HiJackThis log. Let me know how your computer is running.

I had a few problems this time following the instructions. After I ran the nail.exe, my windows explorer would not load, a window would come up and sit there. Had to kill it using Ctrl-Alt-Del. Also, when I tried to re-boot out of safe mode, the computer would not re-boot. I had to completely shut it down, then it came back. Now that I am in regular mode, windows explorer seems to be working fine. I tried to delete the files you listed in step 12 by using a command prompt, however, the files did not exist. Finally, I was unable to get the ActiveScan, to scan my computer, I don't know if they are having problems with the site or not. So I am going to post the ewido and hijackthis only. On a final note, I have not yet recieved a pop-up from aurora......could it be gone! ! !

We still have a little trojan problem but I need you to run a full anti-virus scan first.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Anti-Virus Web Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Standard
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Please follow the instructions provided, you may want to print out these instructions and use them as a reference.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
    • Click on Start
    • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the updates are installed do the following:
    • REBOOT into Safe Mode
    • Run EWIDO
    • Click on scanner
    • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
      • Binder
      • Crypter
      • Archives
    • Click on Start Scan
    • Let the program scan the machine
    • While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
    • Click Save report
    • Save the report to your desktop
  • Reboot your machine and post back a new HJT log and the ewido .txt log file you saved by using Add Reply

Ok, I ran Ewido, however after I started the scan, I though I may have clicked on the wrong type of scan, so I canceled it and started a new one. In this process I lost the report of 8 infections it had found and cleaned. (Sorry about that). Here is the report of the second scan I ran as well as a new HijackThis log.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Download Killbox here: http://www.downloads...org/KillBox.exe and put it on your desktop

Open Killbox

Check the following boxes:

Standard File Kill
End Explorer Shell While Killing file

Copy & paste the full path of the file below into the Killbox topmost box.

c:\windows\system32\ajspqjx.exe

With the full path to the file name in the topmost textbox, Click the Red X ...and for the confirmation message that will appear, you will need to click Yes

It may not delete.

Use killbox to delete the file you were not able to delete as follows:

Open Killbox

Check the following boxes:

Delete on Reboot

With the full path to the file name in the topmost textbox. Click the Red X ...and for the confirmation message that will appear, you will need to click Yes

A second message will ask to Reboot now? you will need to click YES
Note: Killbox will let you know if the file does not exist.

After the reboot scan with hijackthis and fix the following if it is still listed

Note: This may take 3-5 attempts. These trojans are often hard to kill.

Reboot and Post a new hijackthis log

Ok, did as you said, but didn't go as smoothly...or maybe it did, you be the judge. When I used Killbox with the "Standard File Kill" and "End explorer shell while killing file" options, killbox stated that the file did not exist. So I did the second method you suggested using the "delete on reboot" option. When I did this I got the following error message window:

PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process


and the computer would not reboot. I tried it once more, same result. I then manually rebooted the computer and then ran HijackThis. The file that you stated "ajspqjx.exe" was there, so I selected it and clicked fix. After which, the file did not re-appear after two scans. here is the hijacke this log, after the second scan that I had run:

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1. Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
2. Left click on "System Restore Tab"
3. Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
4. Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1.Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
2.Click on "Apply"

2. Cleanup the leftovers. Download CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.


3. Finally, Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.


Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)
