Hello Ustion and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which may not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have quite a mixture of malware and Trojans that need to be eradicated. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

The first thing I noted about your set-up was the apparent lack of an antivirus programme. We must make that a priority for future protection.

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

AVG antivirus FREE edition
CCleaner
Ewido Security Suite

Please double click the AVG free edition download and follow the instruction to install AVG on to your system. When you have done this, allow AVG to scan the whole of your PC for problems. AVG by default will both update and scan on a daily basis, providing that your PC is switched on.

Now that we have safeguarding against future infections, let’s clean up what I can see on your PC.

Install Ewido Security Suite (it is a 14-day trial version of the programme).
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The programme will prompt you to update click the OK button
  • The programme will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
    • Binder
    • Crypter
    • Archives
  • Click on Start Scan
  • Let the programme scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop and include it in your reply.
Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O20 - Winlogon Notify: App Management - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mCpistub.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: Unimodem - C:\WINDOWS\system32\WhhRm.dll (file missing)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Please now reboot into safe mode. Here's how:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. A menu should appear where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel (if present):(click Start>Settings>Control Panel)

BullsEye Network
CashBack
ISTbar

Please notify me of any other programmes that you don’t recognise in that list in your next response

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please delete these folders (if present) using Windows Explorer:

C:\Program Files\Gatw\
C:\Program Files\CashBack\
C:\Program Files\BullsEye Network\
C:\Program Files\ISTsvc\

Please delete these files (if present) using Windows Explorer:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\mCpistub.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\mscb.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\npwuti.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.4\UWFX5LP_0001_0715NetInstaller.exe
C:\WINDOWS\yhwgx.exe

Close Windows Explorer and Reboot normally

Now we must hide the files we revealed earlier by reversing the process, this is an important safeguard to stop important system files being deleted by accident.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

Every things seems good, except this message keeps coming up:

Microsoft Visual C+ + Runtime Library
Buffer overrun detected!
Program: C\WINDOWS\systems32\rundll32.exe
A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program’s internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated.

And then followed by this message:

Microsoft Internet Explorer
NOTICE: If your computer errors in the registry database or file system, it could cause unpredictable or erratic behaviour, freezes and crashes. Fixing these errors can increase your computer’s performance and prevent data loss.
Would you like to install WinFixer 2005 to check your computer for free?
(Recommended)

Then it loads up the winfixer website and starts installing…

Thanks :tazz:

Hello again Justin

Looks like we managed to zap most of it with the first hit, and the Ewido log has provided some clues.

I noted that three names are mentioned: Justin, Amy and Anne. Is this a multiple identity PC? Do you have administrator’s rights?

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O9 - Extra button: eBay - Homepage - {EF79EAC5-3452-4E02-B8BD-BA4C89F1AC7A} - C:\Program Files\IrfanView\Ebay\Ebay.htm (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: MediaContentIndex - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mCpistub.dll

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Please now reboot into safe mode. Here's how:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. A menu should appear where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please delete this file (if present) using Windows Explorer:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\mCpistub.dll

Close Windows Explorer and Reboot normally

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune....oads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads....org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

Hello again Justin

The VX2 infection on your PC is confirmed.

Close any programmes you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log for each person with their own settings (Justin, Amy and Anne and any others I haven't mentioned) and we'll clean up what's left. Please make the person's HJT log obvious.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Looks like VX2 is gone. Let’s just clear up the rest now for each user. Follow the instructions fully even if some files are not found. Each user has a slightly different problem but also a common theme. Please be thorough.

Logon as Justin.

I note that you are running HijackThis from Desktop; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else since backup files can be deleted if they are not within their own folder!

Go to Start>Run and type Services.msc then hit OK
Scroll down and find this service:

Wintab32

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on Properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then OK.

Run HiJackThis. Click on None of the above, just start the program. Now, click on the Config button (bottom right), then click on Misc Tools, then click on Delete an NT Service a window will pop up. Enter this item into that field (copy and paste):

Wintab32

Click OK.

It should pull up information about the service, when it asks if you want to reboot now click YES

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O9 - Extra button: eBay - Homepage - {EF79EAC5-3452-4E02-B8BD-BA4C89F1AC7A} - C:\Program Files\IrfanView\Ebay\Ebay.htm (file missing)
O23 - Service: Wintab32 - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\System32\Wintab32.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Please now reboot into safe mode. Here's how:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. A menu should appear where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please delete this file (if present) using Windows Explorer:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\Wintab32.exe

Close Windows Explorer and Reboot normally

Now we must hide the files we revealed earlier by reversing the process, this is an important safeguard to stop important system files being deleted by accident.

I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

Congratulations! your new logs are clean. :tazz: Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

MOST IMPORTANT: You should update Windows and Internet Explorer to get all the Latest Security Patches to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the internet.

I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one.

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one spyware detector/prevention programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-Virus updated. ;)

Just to put your mind at rest, the 09 entry that refuses to go away is, if it was intact, a legitimate entry. If HJT is reporting it wrong i.e. it is there, then I would leave it alone anyway.

Happy safe surfing Justin, Amy and Anne
