I hope I'm in the correct forum. When I try to install my children's games, I get this message: "C:WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. System is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsost Windows applications". I don't understand this as other games I've installed have not had this issue. I tried the Compatibilty Wizard, Ad/Remove programs, Run..., Windows updates, and certain game patches. Nothing seems to work. This message appears no matter which game I try to install. The games I've installed previously seem to work fine. We have Windows XP, if that helps. I would greatly appreciate any advice! Thanks!

Go to "My Computer" and double click your hard drive (usually c:\). Next double click "windows", double click "system32" and find the file named config.nt Right click the file and click "open". Pick "Choose the program from a list". Pick notepad Scroll down to the bottom of the text and enter the line shown below:

device=%systemroot%\system32\himem.sys

DO NOT ADD REM AT THE BEGINNING

Click 'File' at the top left of the window and click "Save" close the window.


Next find the file named autoexec.nt in the system32 folder also.
Right click the file and click "open". Pick "Choose the program from a list". Pick notepad Scroll down to the bottom of the text and enter the line shown below:

DO NOT ADD REM AT THE BEGINNING

Click 'File' at the top left of the window and click "Save" close the window.
Reboot your pc and install the game.

OK, I followed all the suggested steps, but no luck. I still get the same error message when trying to install children's games. A few things of interest:
-I could not find autoexec.nt in the system32 folder. However, Search found a autoexec nt file in the Windows/repair folder (also saw a config nt file there).
-I did find config.nt in the system32 folder and entered suggested text, although the same text was already there (no REM at the beginning).
-I also saw a NTDECT file in the Local Disk (C:) files. Left click resulted in this-
" 16 Bit MS-DOS Subsystem
C:\NTDETECT.com
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT
The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows Applications. Choose 'close' to terminate the application". This is the same message I get when trying to install the kid's games!
-I restored the config.nt in the system32 folder after rebooting and determining that the games were still getting the same error message and would not install.
Well, I don't know if any of that made sense to you, it was a little fuzzy to me at 3:00 in the morning! I am definitely a C.I.P (Computer Illiterate Person)! Thanks again for your help.

Check the autoexec.nt file in system repair and see if the entry is in it. If so then copy the file to c:\windows\system32 and reboot and try again.

J.R., you are Wonderful! Marvelous! Amazing! Can you tell I am happy?! I can't believe that actually worked, it seemed too easy! I thank you, my children thank you, my children's children thank you ...OK, I'm not really that old! But my kids and I are truly delighted. In our book, you are a hero!!!

same problem. i have the line already in the himen.sys file
but i only have a autoexec.nt_ file which is encrypted...
