Recently I was reading a few boards that stated that Thermal Pads are the worst thermal compound to use when trying to dissapate heat from the CPU and that Thermal Grease is much better they recommend Arctic Silver Premium Silver Thermal Compound[2], but when I visit the AMD website they state that Thermal pads are much better[3] but they say for the Athlon 64 (which I own) thermal grease is acceptable[4].

I hear great things about Artic Silver 5. I'm using it right now, and even in my horribly cooled (only 2 fans that came with the case currently) my CPU idles at about 37 and is at about 47-50 at load.

Retail AMD cpus come with a heatsink that has...?...not really a pad?...some gray stuff....whatever it is it works OK?

So how long does the Artic last or do you just put it on and forget about it? because I am not really sure how thermal compounds work and I removed my heatsink so they suggested that I replace the gray stuff so I was thinking about getting the grease but I am not sure how it works and how to apply it.

Hi,

If you removed the hsf you must remove the pad with a piece of credit card, clean the remainder with isopropyl alcohol and apply new paste, preferably as the guys suggest artic silver5 but make sure to apply by the dierections Metalive provided.

Unlike some other paste I have never seen artic silver fail, I also have never seen a pad that comes with a stock Amd hs fail, this is why I think Amd recomends using thier pads because some thermal paste will over time dry out and fail.

Yeah the AMD stuff is pretty good im idleing at 35 now but can be as low as 28. Would like to know what it is though.

Is it necessary for me to change my thermal pad if I installed the heatsink but removed it but the pad never melted since the computer hasn't got that much heat yet since it had problems from the start so I had to trade the mobo I only had the CPU/heatsink on for 4 days

Yeah it isnt really a pad though for amd its weird it doesnt melt it will stick straight away on to the cpu it is half paste half pad really. So cleaning is a big yes. Is there something wrong with your current temps?
