Hey all-
I just had and got rid of the About:Blank hijacker and the AVGOLD stuff
too. (Manual removal and SMITREM).

All seems back to normal....BUT....

When I right-click my desktop and select PROPERTIES
to change settings, I only get one option. It is like the normal
window, but the top bar says display properties. There are no tabs
and it reads:

A THEME IS A BACKGROUND PLUS A SET OF SOUNDS, ICONS, AND
OTHER ELEMENTS TO HELP YOU PERSONALIZE YOUR COMPUTER WITH
ONE CLICK.

Then the THEME box had CUSTOM THEM and the background was BSOD
telling me I was infected.

I did notice that if I click around the top, I can hit a button that is not
shown and get to what used to be the SCREENSAVER tab....

Can this be fixed?

Still no resolution. It feels like a permanent corruption, like someone with VB created a new "PROPERTIES" dialogue box for the display properties and now I am stuck.

Any help would be appreciated. It is not a terrible hack in that I rarely change my video settings, but it is an annoyance.

Download & install CleanUp
Don't run it yet.

Launch HiJackThis and close any other open windows. Make sure it's the only program running, let it scan and check the following objects for removal;

Download the attached zip.file, unzip it. Run fixreg1.reg, then fixreg2.reg

Hit YES when Windows asks you to merge with the registry.

Reboot, post back and let me know what problems you have now.

Did as instructed (RegFix1 and RegFix2) and here is the HiJack log.
Still same problem. When I right click on the desktop and open properties
I have only the THEMES window and cannot see any of the old tabs to change
settings for video/desktop/appearance. It seems like a hack, because if
I move the mouse around where the tabs used to be and click, I can change
the box to one where you change the desktop picture).

Hi again!

Download the Luna theme at
http://users.pandora...patchy/luna.zip

Unzip it (right click the luna.zip and select extract all) and MOVE the luna.msstyles which is present in that folder you unzipped to, to this folder: C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\Luna

Don't move it to anywhere else other than that folder!

REBOOT!!

See if ya can change your PC's appearance. Let me know.

Ok. I can change the computers appearance. Here is the problem. When I
place the pointer on the desktop (not on an icon) and RIGHT-CLICK and select
PROPERTIES, the dialogue box comes up like it is suppose to.

HOWEVER... it seems corrupt...

There are no tabs across the top (THEMES, DESKTOP, SCREEN SAVER, APPEARANCE,
SETTINGS).

The window showing looks to be exactly like the original that is displayed
when the THEME tab is selected. It says:

A THEME IS A BACKGROUND PLUS A SET OF SOUNDS, ICONS, and OTHER
ELEMENTS TO HELP YOU PERSONALIZE YOUR COMPUTER WITH ONE CLICK.

Then there is the pull down box with THEME above it and I can select
WINDOWS XP, MY CURRENT THEME, WINDOWS CLASSIC, MORE THEMES
ONLINE and BROWSE.

Funny thing is, if I select a theme (even the one that is currently
displayed, the APPLY button becomes active (goes from GREYED OUT to
BLACK) and if I hit APPLY, it applies the new theme (or same one, if
I did not select a new one) and THEN, the tabs all appear and
it seems to operate as normal.

Does not seem to be causing problems, but seems like a corruption still.

check Advanced , then check search system, hidden and subfolders, then search for

comctl32.dll

How many does it find? right click the file> choose properties > choose VERSION tab

What information, particularly version, do you have in the c:\windows\system32 folder?

I want you to go to control panel and create a new user account...log off, log back in as the new account
