Hey Guys,

I'm pretty good with computers and this stuff is kicking my @#$$@)#$&. I'm about ready to format and start over if you can't help.

This is my first post here so bear with me if I don't so something right. I have ran AdAware, SpyBot, SpySweeper, TrendMicro, CWShredder, AVG, Norton and tried several other fixes I've seen on fifferent forums. I've ran in safe mode, deleted registry entries ... you name it. I need help from the pro's now.

Please let me know what else you need.

Here's my log file:

Hi Caldude and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

1. Go to Geeks to Go
. Click on My Controls at the top right hand corner of the window. (make sure you have signed in first)
. In the left hand column, click "View Topics"
. If you click on the title of your post, you will be taken there

2. Also, while at the My Controls page, check the box to the right of your post and then scroll down.
.Where it says "unsubscribe" click the pull-down menu and select "immediate email notification"

3. You have 2 copies of HJT on your desktop. Please DELETE 1 copy just to avoid any possible confusion.

4. Your system 's major problem is an infection from a variant of About:Blank.
Some of the elements of the infection are currently missing but I expect them to appear on the next reboot.

5. PLease download and install Firefox as I will be asking you to use it exclusively during the period of the infection.

6. Reboot your system.

7. Post a fresh HJT log

Regards,

Trevuren

Thanks Trevuren for the quick response!

Ok, I also installed and ran EWido and attempted TDS-3, but gave up win I couldn't update data base easily.

BTW - I have many things disabled in the "config" "startup" menu if that matters.

New log after reboot:

PLease just enable everything so I know what I am really dealing with. Once your system is clean, you can disable/Uninstall anything you want. :tazz:

You appear to have 3 antivirus programs on your system at the same time. This can often cause problems within the system and even interfere with one another to apoint where their co-existence facilitates infection.

It would be better to have only 1 running. If you don't want to remove the other two, please ensure that they are non functional.

....sorry about that. Ok, everything is enabaled now.

Norton is disabled and I will disable AVG, which should leave me with just TrendMicro, which is anti-spyware.

Here is everything enabled:

I had a couple of issues.

First - this line was missing in the HJT log after safe mode boot: O23 -Service: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper ( 11Fßä #•ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\crkh.exe" /s (file missing) I went ahead with checking and removing everything else.

Second - copy/past did not work directly from your post into the KillBox window so I did a copy/past to Notepad and then I could only get a single file in the file window. I went ahead with the procedure anyway.

The Ewido, AdAware, CWShredder and TrendMicro-AntiSpy scans were clean, but SpyBot still found AV-Gold. I tried going to the registry key that was provided and I cannot delete the key... even in safe mode or even look at the subkeys. Here is the key that SpyBot gives: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{9CB478A2-CA39-0CFD-EFAC-DB80710601D3}

I don't think the copy/past worked properly in KillBox...IMO.

FYI - also there are 3 user logins for this computer (only two are administrative). I wasn't sure if this would affect the mitigation approach or not.

Here are my logs from Normal boot mode:

We need you to disable a few programs so that the changes we need to make will be allowed:

1 Disable Spy Sweeper:

To disable SpySweeper:

Open it click >Options over to the left then >program options >Uncheck "load at windows startup".
Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck all there.
Uncheck "home page shield".
Uncheck 'automaticly restore default without notifiction

2. If TrendMicro's Anti-Spyware has any resident program, could you please disable it also.

3. Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window and Reboot Your System

4. I need you to download MWav to a convenient location.

This scan might take around 3+ hours to finish when set to scan everything.
I need you to run MWav by double-clicking on mwav.exe. This scan only produces a report, it doesn't clean your system. I will analyze the report and recommend a course of action depending on the results.

Put a check next to the below items before scanning:
  • Memory
  • Startup Folders
  • Drive - All Local Drives
  • Folder - then click "browse" to change the directory to C: (default is C:\Windows)
  • Registry
  • System Folders
  • Services
  • Include Sub-Directory
  • Scan All Files
Please make sure ALL of these are checked, then press the Scan button. This typically will take hours to complete.

**NOTE*** Sometimes MWav will pause and it appears to be finished, but it isn't done. Just let it run until it says it's complete.

On the bottom portion of the window, you will see the lower panel where MWav is listing "infected items", please highlight everything in that lower panel and copy them by holding CTRL + C then paste it here. The whole log will be extremely BIG so there is no way to post the log. I just need the infected items list.

Regards,

Trevuren

1. I want you to download and run a free trial version of an anti-trojan program called Trojan Hunter: Trojan Hunter . Let it scan your whole system and remove anything it finds.

REBOOT
your system.

2. Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

Regards,

Trevuren

I downloaded, updated the definition files and ran it and it came back with nothing. I went into options and enabled all the options under the advanced folder and I'm scanning again. Not sure if this is of any value to you.

Here is the Trojan Hunter log file with everything that I enabled.

1. Plus run About:Buster again until the report shows no ADS removed.

2. REBOOT your system

3. Please run the Panda Online Virus Scan from:HERE and let it remove anything it finds.

4. REBOOT

5. Tell me how your system is running

Ok, here’s the update Trevuren.

First - I was able to resolve the AVGold registry key issue that SpyBot and I could not remove. I looked at the privileges for that registry key and found it belonged to the other user with admin rights. I was able to log in as that user and Bingo...SpyBot removed it and now it’s gone.

I ran AboutBuster like you said, and everything was clean. I could not run the online Panda Virus Scan because my IE would not run. The site says it will only run on IE, which is completely hosed.

Windows could not find the IE .exe file so I let it search and it found one in the uninstall folder and asked to “Fix” or “Delete”. I let it fix it and now I can open IE, but things don’t work. The WebPages are hosed the way their displayed and it’s not a setting issue -Windows Update doesn’t work, etc.

Here is the good news – Ewido, CWShredder, AVG, AboutBuster, Torjan Hunter, SpySweeper, and SpyBot all run clean now. It looks like we finally got rid of the bugs. Now I just need to repair the damage.

So I'm left with two problems – first is IE is hosed, which I’ve tried to remove and repair through add/removed windows programs and using "scf /scannow" and no luck.

The second problem is something is also hosed in the background display colors in many different windows. For instance, the Windows Help and Support Center background is normally blue and this machine comes up white. I’ve changed everything back to the standard Windows XP theme, but no luck. Also, while in IE, the background colors were messed up too along with all the text and images.

Hopefully these two issues won't be too hard to resolve.

Here is my HJT log after all this:
