There is some really important information in the header portion of the HijackThis log that I'll need to continue. It should look something like this:

Heya and welcome to Geeks to Go, chase8937. My name is Guse and I'll be helping you.

Firstly, and most importantly, I notice that HijackThis is running from a temporary directory (possibly even the zip file). This is not advisable due to the fact that HijackThis stores important backup information that can be lost if it’s stored in a temporary directory.

My advice is to create a folder under your C: drive called HJT and move the program there before continuing. This is pretty important.

Now, you have a CoolWebSearch infection. First we will need to download a few tools that will help us in the removal of your problem.

The Hoster Please do not use program yet
The CWShredder
About:Buster by RubbeRDuckY
Cleanup! (Install, but don’t run)
*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Save all of these files somewhere you will remember like to the Desktop.

Update About:Buster
  • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
  • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
  • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
  • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
  • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update" then click the X to close that window.
  • Now close About:Buster
Update CWShredder
  • Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
  • Click Check For Update
  • Close CWShredder
Unzip Hoster to your desktop

Open up the Hoster program.
  • Make sure that the "make hosts writable?" button in the upper right corner is enabled.
  • Click back up Host files
  • then click Restore orginal host files
  • close program
Then, let’s get to removing some of the infection.

Run HijackThis and place check marks next to the following entries in bold:

Make sure that you’ve visually double-checked that those (and only those) entries have been selected and click Fix

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please run about:buster by RubbeRDuckY:
  • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
  • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
  • It will begin to check your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I may need a copy of it later.
  • Reboot your computer into safe mode again
Run about:buster again following the same instructions as above, this time without the restart at the end

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Then, using Windows Explorer, find and delete the following files and folders (if they exist):

C:\Windows\ld.exe
C:\Windows\Dnse.dll
C:\Windows\sstyle.css
C:\Windows\System\Systeminit.exe

If you get an error when deleting a file, right-click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again.

Now run CleanUp!

Reboot your computer into normal windows.

Double-click on the shortcut icon we made to Kaspersky online earlier in the fix. Let it run through and save a log when it’s finished.

After all that, please post back with how things went as well as the logs requested and a new HiJackThis log.

Hey Gus I moved my Hijack file, i down loaded these tools, ran them but I dont know if i did it right. The short cut we made to Kaspersky I do not remember anything about that. I do not know where the other logs are saved. sorry for not know anything about computers.

Make sure that you’ve visually double-checked that those (and only those) entries have been selected and click Fix

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please run about:buster by RubbeRDuckY:
  • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
  • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
  • It will begin to check your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I may need a copy of it later.
  • Reboot your computer into safe mode again
Run about:buster again following the same instructions as above, this time without the restart at the end

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Next, go to Add or Remove Programs, and uninstall the following program (if it exists):

Party Poker

Then, using Windows Explorer, find and delete the following files and folders (if they exist):

c:\program files\partypoker\ (<~~~ entire folder)

If you get an error when deleting a file, right-click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again.

Now run CleanUp!

Reboot your computer into normal windows.

Double-click on the shortcut icon we made to Kaspersky online earlier in the fix. Let it run through and save a log when it’s finished.

After all that, please post back with how things went as well as the logs requested and a new HiJackThis log.

Seems to be working fine the only thing was when I went to run Ad Ware it would stop at the same spot. And spybot would take a to long time to run, And coolweb search was on there. Thanks for the help Guse

So Adaware would freeze in the same spot every time, Spybot takes forever to run and CoolWebSearch was on there?

Reboot and post me 1 more HijackThis log just so we can make sure that it's clean, if you don't mind.

Msi.dll is an important system file (it's your Windows Installer). I can't imagine why it would freeze there.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling Adaware. That may help. Regardless:

In the future, here are some suggestions to keep your computer more secure.
Use a firewall - If you’re on a broadband connection, this shouldn’t even be an option. You can get a good, FREE firewall from ZoneLabs called ZoneAlarm here.

Make sure that you keep Windows up to date - Microsoft is constantly releasing updates to plug holes in their OS. It’s a good idea to take advantage of these as frequently as possible. As a matter of fact, if you’re lazy like me you can set Automatic Updates by right clicking on My Computer and selecting Properties . Then click the Automatic Updates tab, then click the Automatic radio button then click OK.

Make sure you have an up-to-date virus scanner – This is super important. Heck, it typically doesn’t even matter which one that you use… just pick one and keep it updated. A free virus scanner can be had from Grisoft, called AVG. Get it here.

You can also get a more secure browser – Not a necessity at all, but most exploits are manufactured to attack Internet Explorer. For the time being, browsers such as Opera and Firefox aren’t nearly as exploitable… yet.

Practice safe browsing – Just some run of the mill things to keep you safer. Don’t open email attachments even from people you know unless you know the attachment is coming. Try to stay to larger websites… it’s the smaller… less public ones that typically give you trouble (*this isn’t to say NEVER go there, just minimize it*). Also, try to stay legal: warez (stolen software) and file sharing apps (Kazaa, Torrents) tend to have grotesque amounts of spyware associated.

These are just some helpful tips. Enjoy malware-free computing!

Guse just wanted you to know that I uninstalled ad aware'se, but it still stops at 253 modules. Objects scanned is around 495-523.
