I can't believe you guys provide this service. I stumbled upon it during my 10 hours Sunday of research (ie floundering). I really don't believe this is a malware issue although I've gone through the suggested procedure excepting the Hijack This stage. Seems all clean.

Although, I did get a message that windows was trying to install a driver for

Windows Socket 2.0 Non-IFS Service Provider Support Environment

which apparently is related to "Spyware.GuardMon" but is according to symantec:

Creates a service with the following attributes:

Service Name: "WS2IFSL"
Display Name: "Windows Socket 2.0 Non-IFS Service Provider Support Environment"
Path to executable: "%System%\drivers\ws2ifsl.sys"
Startup type: "Manual"

Note: This is a legitimate service and is used by LSPs which do not use IFS (Installable File System) supported sockets.

(ref:) http://securityrespo...e.guardmon.html

However, I have no other signs of virus or spyware.

It all started when I tried to "Speed up my computer" with this post:

http://forums.gbpvr....read.php?t=6797

I'll paste the particulars here:

(1. Tweaking HTPC GBPVR Server

First thing you have to do is make sure:

If limited reservable bandwidth is set correctly?
Click on Start
Click on Run
Type: gpedit.msc (Group Policy)
Click on Administrative Templates
Click on Network
Click on QoS Packet Scheduler
Look at your right screen panel
There should be (Limit reservable bandwidth)
Click on that right now
It should be Not Configured
Click on Enable
Change the Bandwidth Limit % 0
Click Apply
Click ok

Before you exit out

Click on Start
Right click on My Computer
Click on Properties
Click on System Restore Tab
Local Drive C: Monitoring
Local Drive D: Monitoring

Now what I do is I turn this off, why you say? I get better performance with out having it on and free up a lot of useful Hard drive space in process. With it on it just drags the system down

To shut this feature down you have

Click on each drive then on Settings
Move the bar from the right to the left all the way
Click on turn off
Click on ok or apply
Do the same for each drive
Close out and exit

Once that's done

Click on Start
Click on Run
Type: services.msc (Services)
Scroll down the list for System Restore
Right click on that service, then on Properties
Change from Automatic to Disabled
Click on Stop Service
Click on Apply or okay

Before you go, there are some more you can disabled
Just repeat the above to disable these below:

Remote Registry
Secondary Logon
Net Logon
SSDP
Help and Support (only if you're not going to call up any help windows)
Wireless (only if you're not going to use it)
Error Reporting
Indexing
Web Client (if you don't use Web Logic Applications)

Close out and exit

Go back to Group Policy

Click on Windows Components
Click on System
Click on System Restore
Click on Turn Off System Restore
Change that from Not Configured to Enable
Click Apply
Click Ok
Click on Turn off Configuration
Change that from Not Configured to Enable
Click Apply
Click Ok

Exit out of Group Policy

2. L2 Cache Settings
PII, P3, P4 and AMD CPU have L2 cache that is not set correctly under all versions of Windows including server.

Click on Start
Click on Run
Type: regedit
Click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Click on SYSTEM
Click on CurrentControlSet
Click on Control
Click on Session Manager
Click on Memory Management
Look at your right Panel
Right click SecondLevelDataCache
Click on Modify
Change from Hexadecimal to Decimal
Enter Value Data

L2 Cache Sizes: 64, 128, 256 (windows default), 512, 1024, 2048, 3072
Even though Windows default is 256 I would still add the right number for
your CPU.

Click okay

There is also another setting you could turn on

LargeSystemCache is set to default off (0)
Right click on LargeSystemCache
Click on Modify
Change 0 to 1
Click on okay

On more before we go is

DisablePagingExecutive is set to default off (0)
Right click on DisablePagingExecutive
Click on Modify
Change 0 to 1
Click on okay

You're done and reboot the system.)

I believe I followed everything to the letter...Maybe that was my problem. I didn't have the sense to leave well enough alone.

BTW, you'll notice that disabling System Restore is one of the suggested actions.
Had I not disabled System Restore I probably wouldn't be writing you today.

The problem now is that when I try to explore the Microsoft Windows Network under Entire Network, get the following error:

"Unable to browse the network.
The network is not present or not started.
For more information, click Help."

I am able to access all shared files on this machine from my networked laptop and can read/write from the laptop, but NOT vice versa.

Looking deeper and following some advice about this I believe I've narrowed it down to Workstation Service which has no dependencies, but most everything else
depends on Workstation Service.

When I try to start up Workstation, however, I get this message:

"Windows could not start the Workstation on Local Computer. For more information review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service specific error code 2250."

The error log reads:

"The Workstation service terminated with service-specific error 2250 (0x8CA).
For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp."

That's it. I'm at a standstill. Could be worse. I haven't lost any data and the computer is still usable.

I'm not too hopeful of getting this fixed, but I commend and admire you guys for doing what you do. Thanks for trying. I appreciate your effort.

BTW, I've since undone everything that was described in the "Speed up your computer" post above.

Thanks, Mike

Just an update, dsenette

I backedup the mup files from XP install CD as mentioned in the MS post. I then ran System File Checker and nothing came up as out of place.

Unfortunately, I still can't browse the network. Since all the system files are in order, is it possible that there are changes to the registry that can be made?

I really appreciate your help,

Thanks, Mike

Hi Dave,

Sorry for the delay in reporting back to you.

I tried the winsock restore utility as you referred to in the post. Unfortunately, it didn't work. If you stumble upon anything else, let me know.

Thanks again for everything,

Mike
