Hilltopsmiler...

Ok...you DO have the Audio Controller that usually needs the extra files, BUT you have a different chipset than I usually see with that controller. I'm going to need to research this a little more before I make a suggestion. I will post back with what I discover.

Are you using the onboard audio? If yes, download, extract, and install This Driver from VIA.

Yes, I did restart my computer. This a.m. I also reinstalled it(uninstalled first) just in case something did not install properly, same results though no sound. I have not totally given up yet though. As I think it just has to be some silly simple thing somewhere.

I know this sounds drastic but it was the only way I could get mine to work even after I paid two system techs to look at it.

First BACK UP all your data, email stuff, saved games pictures, music whatever, driver setup files etc

NUKE your hard drive and reinstall windows,

Windows will install the AC97 drivers then you can install the SoundMax drivers or whatever you have.

I can't do that as the cd player is not working either,or the other drive isn't working either. I am thinking maybe I need a new hard drive? I was going to do the recovery disc but it the cd drive will not work. This all happened at one time......

Hi Hilltopsmiler...

Disconnect all external devices (printer, flash drive, etc...)

Go to your BIOS settings. Somewhere in BIOS (every version is a little different, so I can't guide you much here) there is a way to change your settings to the default settings. Select that option...Now check to see that all drives are set to "Auto" Detect...Also verify that the CD-ROM is set a First Boot Device. Save your settings (Usually F10) and exit setup...Reboot.

Were your drives detected during bootup?

Hi wannabe1,
I went into BIOS and set default settings, yes the CD-Rom is set at first boot and yes the drivers were detected during the boot up. Still no resolution of any of the troubles. I could not see how to check that all drives were set to auto though.
Thanks,
Hilltopsmiler

After extensive unsuccessful Googling, I spent a couple of days arriving at this fix and narrowing it down to this number of steps and have had to use it twice since, always when moving a W98 install from one PC to a better one. It may be possible to achieve the same result with a bit of registry editing and file deleting, but life's too short to spend any more time on it! This works: (for me anyway!)

Make sure you have a backup.
Make sure you have all necessary drivers available.
Start Windows.
Close all running programs.
Run Windows Setup with Windows still running.
Don't save old files.
Skip making Startup Disk when prompted by clicking cancel when asked to put in the floppy disk.
When windows setup completed:
Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs/Windows Components: Remove Multimedia.
Control Panel/Multimedia/Devices remove every device listed - there will probably be one that says it's needed by windows - this is OK.
Remove SoundMax and accept the Restart.
Cancel the Multimedia device install.
Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs/Windows Components: Reinstate Multimedia.
Install DirectX 9.0b drivers and accept restart.
Cancel the Multimedia device install.
Reinstall SoundMax and accept restart.
Should work now.

Enjoy...

The Lone Tech.
