Everything seems to be fine, operationally.

In the first run of Activescan, it opened something that triggered my virus scanner and then crashed, but the later runs (the ones that produced the logs above) were fine so I suspect that was a one-off.

The first install of SpySweeper was kept crashing, but I fixed that by uninstalling and reinstalling, so that also seems to be OK.

Most importantly, I haven't had a recurrence of the original problem which was an attempt to download SAHagent/WebSearch every 24 hours. So I'm pretty happy with things.

Ok, if you want, we can take a final check with ActiveScan. I'll see from that..
Then I'll post you additional suggestions/comments on how to prevent spyware on future. :tazz:

For now, can you run ActiveScan again.

Current Activescan log, which looks similar to the last one given that Activescan doesn't seem to offer a disinfection option today:-

Delete this file if you can find it;
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\games.inf

C:\Documents and Settings\rt\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ empty this folder..

Empty your recycle bin. Reboot and post a fresh Hijackthis log.

I found and deleted the second one, but couldn't find the first.

[Edited to add: Have since seen your edit: I tried to delete the other file in the Application Data folder but was refused as it was in use. As IE was running at the time, it might be a genuine file? The file's name is MSIMGSIZ.DAT.]

Here's some tips for future to prevent spyware;

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed. (My favourite)
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program <= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kaspersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall <= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser <= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice;
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My favourite.)

You can also go ahead and uninstall most of the software you needed during the process (though I'd leave CleanUp! for future use :tazz: ).
