So I got on my computer one day and at the startup when putting in my password to log into windows was the blue screen saying "A fatal error in IE has occured at 0028:C0011E36 in VXD VMM(01) + 00010E36. Error was caused by Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c

* System can not function in normal mode. Please check you security settings.

*Scan your PC with any available antivirus / spyware remover program to fix this problem."

So I have tried several different scanners and nothing seems to catch this thing. Unlike some other people with the same problem I am having, I am able to run most/all(I havent tried EVERYTHING) programs on my computer. At first it was showing error messages for just about everything but I let it sit a while and now it has been allowing me to access programs. The only real problem i can SEE is my background. At first it had an html file as the background telling me to download the antivirus gold and I figured this had something to do with the problem itself. I deleted the background picture file that I found. For a while after I deleted the html picture file that was the background it was just a white background that switched back and forth from white to gray when I moved the mouse over certain things and there was a small bar across the top that would also change colors. During the time I have been on the computer today, it has changed to the blue screen error message as the background. I also have only 3 options on my properties on my desktop :Settings, Effects, and Screen Saver. The rest of the choices that used to be there are not there.I know there is a long process to fix this and I would appreciate any help someone could offer to me. Thank you very much!

:tazz: Thank you Excal but I have resolved my problem. I actually went ahead and formatted my hard drive because I discovered that most of the space taken up on it I couldn't account for and I had a lot of other problems as well and now things are running very smoothly. Thank you. :-D

Sorry to hear you had to reformat :tazz:

Here are some tips that might help you out securing your computer in the furture:

it is important to reset your system Restore, when you are trouble free. Click Here to learn how to.

Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs, if you don't already have them, for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE
Spybot S&D
Microsoft Anti-Spyware

If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest one of these free programs:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

AVG
Avast
AntiVir

The following free programs are great for prevention:

SpywareBlaster 3.4
Spywareguard
IE/Spyad

A Firewall is a must! Here are 3 good free versions:
(do not have more than one firewall running on your system)

Sygate
Kerio
ZoneLabs

There are other options other than Internet Explorer for a browser, which some say have better security. Two of them are:

Firefox
Opera

If you decide to keep Internet Explorer, This site is a great source for tightening up security on It's settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided. Also read How I got Infected
