So how do I set up a SATA HDD? What is RAID for and do I need it for just one SATA HDD? my mobo is GASINXP1394 and I have a WD Raptor SATA HDD. The instructions are totally unclear and not helpful at all, I am completely in the dark here and would appreciate any advice on how to get this thing up and running.

RAID increases storage system performance by combining two or more hard drives, or can be used for data redundancy. You can't utilize RAID with one drive. Glancing at your manual you select Normal from the RAID menu to use one ATA drive (page 13).

cool. I can get as far as windows setup now but heres the problem: when it asks for third party drivers i press f6, I put the CD which has the SATA drivers on it but when it intsalls them, an error occurs for almost every file on the cd and the installation is aborted. Does this mean the drivers are bad?

You can only install third party SATA drivers from a floppy. You'll need to copy the drivers from the CD to a floppy.
