I've posted this in browers and someone suggested that I post here, I hope i'm not cross-posting.

This is very very frustrating so any insight would be most appreciated. The problem is i start up internet explorer and firefox and nothing happens, but they appear in task manager(right now I'm using opera). I've cleaned by computer of spyware and viruses, by using avg, ad-aware, and
spybot S&D. There were a couple of nasties..

I've uninstalled both firefox and internet explorer and tried to re-install. I've rolled back using restore points and no dice. I can open up firefox and explorer in safe mode(that doesn't really help).

My system is a toshiba labtop with XP home(service pack 2 with all the latest updates) on it. Any help would greatly apperciated, I figured I needed to talk to the experts for this one. I really feel I shouldn't have to re-format and reinstall these programs.

Thanks to all who take the time to answer!!!

Hi vpashas, welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your problem.

I am not sure that I can resolve your browser problems but I can help you get rid of a lot of malware.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:

Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
*choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
*uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
*Close the window with ok
*All hidden files will now be visible

Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {567A67BD-CC48-4754-A1E8-44FF0542B902} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\paoi.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Compliant] iktosm.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winsync] C:\WINDOWS\system32\abporj.exe reg_run
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Windows Compliant] iktosm.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Windows Compliant] iktosm.exe
O4 - Startup: Shortcut to pageant.lnk = C:\Program Files\PuTTY\pageant.exe
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://ny.contentmatch.net (HKLM)
O16 - DPF: {15AD6789-CDB4-47E1-A9DA-992EE8E6BAD6} - http://static.windup...e/bridge-c7.cab
O16 - DPF: {7E980B9B-8AE5-466A-B6D6-DA8CF814E78A} (MJLauncherCtrl Class) - http://www.shockwave...mjolauncher.cab
O16 - DPF: {AB29A544-D6B4-4E36-A1F8-D3E34FC7B00A} (WTHoster Class) - http://install.wildt...stx/install.cab

O18 - Filter: text/plain - {B8E9B86E-EB7D-40E4-A639-01BDDBB9C906} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\paoi.dll

Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window and Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

*Restart the computer.
*as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
*Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
*press Enter.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if they are present):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\abporj.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\paoi.dll
iktosm.exe<===You will have to search for this one
C:\Program Files\PuTTY<===Folder and all its content

Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now.

Regards,

Trevuren

Hi Trevuren,

Thank you very much for your fast reply!!!

I didn't realize those maleware programs were still kicking about(i thought I got 'em all). I vouch for Putty and pagent(it's an ssh program I use all the time).

I removed those other entries via hijack this, and searched for the programs you mentioned(i believe my virus scanner caught 'em all). , so non of them were lying about. This is the most recent log, however IE and firefox are still MIA...:tazz:

I will try a re-install of both...

Do not re-install anything until we have finished. You still have a very bad bug on your system and it couls ruin any new installation.

Please Download the following tools to assist us in removing this infection!
  • Download WinPFind
    • Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"
    • Extract it somewhere you will remember like the Desktop
    • Dont do anything with it yet!
  • Download Track qoo
    • Save it somewhere you will remember like the Desktop
You should be logged into Geeks when you attempt the download of this one.
Reboot into Safe Mode

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Doubleclick WinPFind.exe
  • Click "Start Scan"
  • It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!
  • Once the Scan is Complete
  • Go to the WinPFind folder
  • Locate WinPFind.txt
  • Place those results in the next post!
Reboot back to Normal Mode!

Double Click on "Track qoo.vbs"

Note - If you Antivirus has Script Blocking, you will get a Pop Up Windows asking you what to do. Allow this Entire Script to Run, its harmless!

Wait a few seconds and a notepad page will pop up. Copy & Paste those results and place them in the next post along with the results of WinPFind!

Regards,

Trevuren

Wow, I'm impressed with the expediancy of your replies. Thanks!

I've done as you said: The WPFind log is:

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "not responding" you can ignore it. Windows is throwing this message up even though the program is still running. As long as the hard disk is working then the program is running.

So much for the expediency of my replies :tazz:

1. Download Pocket KillBox from here. There is a Direct Download and a description of what the Program does inside this link.

2. Please open Notepad, and copy/paste the code in the box below into a new text file. Save it as KillQoo.reg (set Filetype to "All Files") and save it on your Desktop.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\gxmqnfns]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{97919c75-7e22-4016-92ce-271d74fafbce}]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"gxmqnfns"=-

3. Open Pocket Killbox and Copy & Paste the entries below into the "Full Path of File to Delete"

C:\WINDOWS\system32\abporj.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\daebn.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\fhklgdg.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\rebates.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\pqn9oeu8.TMP
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\dirt.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\pashas\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\dirt.exe

As you Paste each entry into Killbox, place a tick by any of these Selections available

"Delete on Reboot"
"Unregister .dll before Deleting"

Click the Red Circle with the White X in the Middle to Delete!

4. Restart in Safe Mode and Run those files through Killbox once more to be sure nothing survived.

This time place a tick by any of these selections available

"Standard File Kill"
"End Explorer Shell while Killing File"
"Unregister .dll before Deleting"

5. Now Locate and DoubleClick KillQoo.reg-> Allow it to merge into the Registry!

6. Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winsync] C:\WINDOWS\system32\abporj.exe reg_run

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

7. Restart back in Normal Mode and Post a fresh HijackThis log!

Regards,

Trevuren

Hi Trevuren,

I couldn't keep up with the replies...:tazz: I was away from my computer for the w/e so I didn't get a change to run what you asked, but when I did, my mozilla and IE came back!!!!! I'm very very happy, thanks so much!!! I've read some threads where ppl complained about the expediancy of the replies, and I don't know what they are talking about, especially since ppl are doing this for free. So, I apperciate all the time you put in. Thank you much!!

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1. Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
2. Left click on "System Restore Tab"
3. Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
4. Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1.Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
2.Click on "Apply"

2. Cleanup the leftovers. Download CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

3. Finally, Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)

Regards,
