I have a Sony VAIO running XP wirelessly networked to an IBM laptop running on Windows 2000. I cannot access the internet on the VAIO, but can with the laptop, so I have ruled out the router or cable modem (problem is on the VAIO with XP). Every time I try to access the blasted internet on the VAIO, I get the address 404ads.net.8000/redirect. I have no idea what this is. I tried everything I could on this problem using whatever came back from google searches. I installed Norton Antivirus 2005, installed Windows XP Service Pack 2, ran Adaware SE Personal several times, ran CW Shredder, ran Spybot - Search and Destroy, tried PeperFix, tried WinsockXPFix and the results after all of that are still the same. This is one persistent bugger! The last resort that I've read someone do was scrub the operating system and re-load it from scratch. There's got to be another option, I hope. Can you help? <_< I would greatly appreciate it.

I did ipconfig commands (release, renew, all) and used Hijack This and got the following readings:

I followed the instructions - included below is the log from the scan after i "fixed" the checked items. When I logged on, I still had complications:

1. First of all, when I log on, I get a message that reads "This application has failed to start because SiS_Lib.dll was not found. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem." I pressed OK. By the way, this message had been popping up upon reboot even before my original post.

2. Next, I got a Norton Antivirus warning that says "Malicious script detected. High risk. Your computer is halted and needs to do something about this script. Object: Windows Script Host Shell Object, Activity: Run, File: c:\Program Files\suppo...\server.vbs". It gives me an option to fix it, then it goes to the next screen. Problem is that it comes back after a reboot. This also had been going on even before my original post.

3. After clearing those screens, I was still unable to access the internet. I was not getting a signal from the wireless network, which is odd since my other computer is working fine. FYI, in a previous post I listed what I got when I typed in ipconfig. Are there any issues with connectivity in general in your opinion?

4. The error message I got when accessing IE was "IE could not open the search page". And the status bar at the lower left of the window said "Downloading from site res://c:\windows\system32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror

As you can tell, I have issues <_<

Here is the post from Hijack This after following your instructions

Let's take care of the problems with your log first, then we'll see what problems remain. Are the definitions for Norton AV up-to-date? You have some problems it should normally catch.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [stcinstaller] c:\installer\id53.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [p34P3qW] dmuint40.exe

Please reboot into safe mode - How do I boot into "Safe" mode?.
Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following files in bold (if found):

c:\installer\id53.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\dmuint40.exe

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. <_<

Hi -

I followed the directions. I ran HijackThis and fixed the two lines that were specified. When in safe mode, the file c:\installer\id53.exe did not exist and the computer would not allow me to delete the other file C:\WINDOWS\System32\dmuint40.exe

Then I rebooted. The problem may be corrected, but I can't tell. I still can't access the internet, due to the fact that I am not getting connectivity to my wireless network. Not sure what's wrong. The wireless signal on the lower right hand area of the screen says that I am connected at 11 Mbps and the signal strength is excellent, but I can't connect. When I try the IE browser, it says "Cannot find server".

Anyway, here is the HijackThis log.

How do you prevent spyware from being installed again? We strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster (it's free for personal use) Click Here.

Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page.

It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks. Click Here to make sure that you have the latest patches for Windows.

These next two steps are optional, but will provide the greatest protection.
1. Use ANY browser besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness. We usually recommend FireFox Posted Image.
2. Install Sun's Java. It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine .

It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder if everything is working okay.

After doing all these, your system will be thoroughly protected from future threats. <_<
