I have just installed an new CD RW Phillips PCRW5224K/00 I running Windows ME
Nero or Kodak will not recognise the drive.
Is there anything you can suggest please.

Yes it installed on the same ribbon as my other CDrom which is the master my cdrw is the slave the cdrw operates correctly as a cdrom but is not recognised as a
recording device

Is it identified correctly in the device manager? (Start -> Run, type devmgmt.msc, click okay)

I typed as you suggested but got an error message saying windows could not find
the file devmgmt.msc.

Sorry that was a shortcut for Windows 2000/XP.

To open the device manager in Windows ME, right-click My Computer, click Properties, and then click the Device Manager tab.

Or, open Control Panel, double-click the System icon, and then click the Device Manager tab.

Everything seems to be installed and recognized correctly. It must a Windows problem.

First try this:
Make sure that the CD-R drive or the CD-RW drive is recognized as a recordable drive, make sure that the Recording tab appears in the CD drive properties:
Click Start, and then click My Computer.
Right-click the CD-R drive or the CD-RW drive, click Properties, and then look for the Recording tab.

If you don't see the recording tab, try this Microsoft Knowledge Base Article and see if it helps:

Looked good but the site applied to XP and my system is ME .
Whent searching but could not find a similar site for ME.

I didn't notice it was for XP.

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling all your burning software? Actually, I would probably just choose one to reinstall.

I have tried changing the software and since writing last I have borrowed a CDRW from a friend and LG the computer recognises it as a cdrw and Kodak will write to it Nero recognises it but will not write to it as it was not the cd drive it came with.

Have you checked the mfg site? Is there a firmware update available for your CD-RW?

Yes there is a firmware upgrade but I don't know what to do with it. When I try to fire it up it say's unable to flash
