Hi,

I've been having computer problems for a few weeks now (running slow, crazy pop-ups, computer randomly shutting off due to a "Windows error", etc.) and all the virus scans I keep running aren't fixing it, so hopefully someone here will be my saving grace.

Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.


Run Ewido:

• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
• You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
• If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
• DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
• If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
• When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
• Save the report to your desktop

Close Ewido


Reboot back into Windows.

Please visit Panda ActiveScan and do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!


Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

Hi,

I'm sorry, I was having some trouble with Ewido - I ran a scan and it found almost 500 infected files, but it wouldn't let me save the report. It kept giving me an error message. So I ran another scan - it wouldn't let me save that one either. So I ran a third one, and it finally let me save it, but by that time there weren't many infected files left. I apologize if this complicates the cleansing process in any way!

Hi SDM,

It happens that you are not able to save the Ewido scan report sometimes. We will now clean up the rest of the junk on your PC.

Please print out these instructions or copy them into a text file on your Desktop for easy access.

During the fix, u will be asked to fix some entries, delete some files or uninstall some programs. If in case, you do not see those entries / files / programs, please make a note of it. Continue with the fix and in your next post please inform me of all deviations from the fix prescribed.

1. Download Programs

Please download these programs and save them in a new folder on your desktop -

CleanUp
Nailfix.exe

Run Nailfix.exe. It will create a separate folder - Nailfix on your desktop and place the extracted files in that folder.

Restart the PC in Safe Mode (repeatedly tap the F8 key when the PC is starting up).

2. Remove Infections

please double-click on Nailfix.bat. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.


Run CleanUp and delete all temp files including temporary internet files

3. Run Hijack This

Run Hijack This and click on scan. The following items need to be fixed -

Open Add or Remove Programs (click on Start ---> Settings ---> Control panel. This should be the 3rd item). Uninstall or remove the following items -

Clear out the files in the Prefetch folder. Go to start> run> type into the box Prefetch and delete all the files in that folder. Dont delete the folder, only the files in it !!!!!!!!


Reboot the PC in Normal Mode.


Run Hijack This and post a fresh HJT log.

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log, and we'll clean up what's left.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

You seem to have picked up a few infections again !!!!!!


Please print out these instructions or copy them into a text file on your Desktop for easy access.

During the fix, u will be asked to fix some entries, delete some files or uninstall some programs. If in case, you do not see those entries / files / programs, please make a note of it. Continue with the fix and in your next post please inform me of all deviations from the fix prescribed.

1. Download Programs

Please download these programs and save them in a new folder on your desktop -

CleanUp
Ewido Security Suite

Install Ewido, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Restart the PC in Safe Mode (repeatedly tap the F8 key when the PC is starting up).

2. Remove Infections

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on Nailfix.bat (it may appear without an extension). Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Run CleanUp and delete all temp files including temporary internet files

Run Ewido full scan. Let it fix any items it finds.

3. Run Hijack This

Run Hijack This and click on scan. The following items need to be fixed -

Close all windows other than Hijack This. Check the boxes next to above items and click on Fix checked.

4. Delete Rogue files

Open Add or Remove Programs (click on Start ---> Settings ---> Control panel. This should be the 3rd item). Uninstall or remove the following items -

Bargain Buddy
Surf Side Kick 3


Open Windows Explorer (right click on Start and then click on explore). Locate and delete the following folders and files -

C:\Program Files\NaviSearch
C:\Program Files\CashBack

Clear out the files in the Prefetch folder. Go to start> run> type into the box Prefetch and delete all the files in that folder. Dont delete the folder, only the files in it !!!!!!!!


Reboot the PC in Normal Mode.


Run Hijack This and post a fresh HJT log along with Ewido scan report.

Hi Stacy,

There is one little pesky infection to get rid of. The problem with this one is that the file mutates i.e. the file name changes on every reboot. So chances are that the file has already changed since your last post.

However it is quite easy to pin down . In the Hijack This log, it appears as -

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [hfuteyk] c:\windows\system32\amtxyis.exe r

The line starts with O4 - HKLM.
The name between the brackets - hfuteyk - is a random name.
The filename is random also - amtxyis.exe - and ends in .exe
The line itself ends with the letter "r"

Once you run Hijack This, you can identify the file easily, I hope. In case you are not comfortable doing this by yourself, Please post a fresh HJT log and donot reboot the PC till I revert with the fix.

Please apply this fix (change the file name if the HJT log shows an altered filename).


Download Process Explorer from HERE

Run Process Explorer and find the following process in the list of Processes:

amtxyis.exe

Select the process and click Process > Suspend.

Leave Process Explorer running with the process suspended the whole time! Do NOT close it - even when your system is rebooting!

Then run HijackThis. Click Config > Misc Tools > Delete a file on reboot...
In the explorer Window select the file c:\windows\system32\amtxyis.exe
When prompted if you want to reboot click YES

After the reboot check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [hfuteyk] c:\windows\system32\amtxyis.exe r

Rescan with HiJackThis and post the new log.
