Hi All.

I have already submitted a couple of problems I think I am having with my new PC, to a different area of this site,a dn got the replies. Thank you.

The main problem is I am connecting online at 42.6 only. With my previous computer (which was also new, and I did a deal with my nephew -- anyone remember!!??) I connected at 52 or 53 each time. They were both new Dell's; his p4 3.0 and mine(current one) P4 2.8.

So same phone line, conditions etc; only difference is PC, and HE is connecting down the rad at 52/53 with my first PC (the P4 3.0) !!

BUT, I just cheked, and we appear to have different modems.
His is

BCM V.92 56k Modem

and mine is

Conexant Smart HSF V.9x 56k Speakerphone PCI modem.

We're both running XP.

The other thing I notice is that the computer makes a whirring, grinding noise occasionally. On some occasions, this occurs EXACTLY EVERY 10 MINUTES!

Other times its random, but not that often.

Could the modem be the problem, and should I demand that Dell collect my PC, install a new modem and return. And perhaps check the connection before sending it back?!

many thanks

Yes, the difference in modems is the reason for different connection speeds. Different modems will connect at different speeds, depending on line conditions. I doubt that Dell will consider this a defect worthy of replacement--after all you are able to connect.

I would contact Dell about the grinding noise. Could be a hard drive problem, and as long as your talking to them see if they're willing to replace the modem. They won't take it back, but they may send you one to install. :D
