Help please !!

I have been following the instructions on things to do prior to posting this, but I got stuck with the Windows updates. I downloaded the last few high priority items I needed, but they could not be installed. I am wondering if the the advanced setting in Ad-Aware regarding "Write-protect system files..." is the cause for not being able to intall the updates. In any case, I am avoiding installing Service Pack 2 particularly because of pending compatibility issues with Adobe video software...

The issue I have is pop ups whether I am on the net or not. The most common site I get is the infamous "loadingwebsite" among many others, most of which I have not allowed in the Internet Explorer Content Advisor, to avoid inappropriate surprises if my three young kids are around. When I boot the computer I also get the error:

I just reinstalled my Norton Antivirus, I have been keeping the Microsoft Antispyware running (besides the Spybot, Ewido, Cleanup!, CWShredder I just added...), and updated my firewall to the most recent version of the Zone Alarm free firewall. Anything that I felt was suspicious or I knew that was no good, I blocked for access to the internet. Also in one ocassion I got a couple of errors on files that I knew where to no good related to the "elite" family, namely eliteype32.exe and elitelsh32.exe, and tried to find them to delete them. I went to the DOS prompt, but they still wouldn't show up, although I knew they were in the WINDOWS\system32\ folder because even when they didn't show under the dir command, when I tried to delete them I got the message that the files were protected some how against that... so I made a copies of the Windows game Winmine.exe, and I renamed the copies with the name of the elite files to overwrite them, which worked. In fact, when I later rebooted, winemine showed up!. It hasn't shown up since, but the pop ups are still comming.

Your help would be greatly appreciated... as I am trying to avoid reformating and reinstalling everything! The kids and wife have been behind me for weeks to get this resolved. It is unfortunate that people enjoy doing harm to others and stealing precious family time. Fortunately there is also good people out there willing to help...

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Thanks for the quick response!

I run option 1 and a couple of times I got a dialog box saying that CFD could not run MS DOS and Windows applications and both times I chose to close. In either case, the notepad appeared and here is what I got:

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log, and we'll clean up what's left.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

I did that, but for some reason, I can't access the internet from the computer, so I am using the laptop, and copying the Hijackthis log on a floppy to share from the laptop. Sometime when that happens, I reboot and I can access the internet again, but I didn't want to reboot in the middle of this steps... just in case.

Let me know when it's OK to reboot...

2. Boot into safemode to do this keep tapping F8 on your keyboard while your PC is starting up you will get a menu select safemode.

3. While in safemode open Hijackthis and click scan. Then tick and fix the following in Hijackthis with all windows closed except Hijackthis.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

To protect yourself further:

• IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.
