Hi bmook and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

1. If you haven't logged in go to Geeks to Go and do so. Then proceed to item a.

If you already have logged in, go directly to item a.

a. Click on My Controls at the top right hand corner of the window.
b. In the left hand column, click "View Topics"
c. If you click on the title of your post, you will be taken there

2. Also, while at the My Controls page, check the box to the right of your post and then scroll down.
.Where it says "unsubscribe" click the pull-down menu and select "immediate email notification"

3. Please DELETE all instances of HJT program from their present location.

4. Download and run the following HijackThis autoinstall program from Here HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

A. Close ALL windows except HJT

B. SCAN with HJT and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')

C. POST the log in this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

Regards,

Trevuren

Trevuren,

Thanks for the help. I downloaded the HJT from the link that you gave me, and I think that it is in it's own folder. When I ran it, it saved under program files in a seperate folder for HJT. Here is my new log:

First:
Please download ewido security suite it is a free version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  • Exit ewido. DO NOT scan yet.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates

Download CCleaner and install it, but do not run it yet.

Please download this file: Revised Installer for the Nailfix Utility
Save it to your desktop.
DO NOT run it yet.

To reboot into SafeMode with Windows XP, you can follow these steps from Microsoft:

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on nailfix.exe.
Click "Next" in the setup, then make sure "Run Nailfix" is checked and click "Finish".
Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Now open ewido and do a scan of your system.
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now as the action.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

Now run HijackThis, click Scan, and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

C:\WINDOWS\systb.dll
C:\WINDOWS\wupdt.exe
C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe

Now run CCleaner
  • Uncheck "Cookies" under "Internet Explorer".
  • If running Firefox: click on the "Applications" tab and uncheck "Cookies" under "Firefox".
  • Click on Run Cleaner in the lower right-hand corner. This can take quite a while to run.
Finally, restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the report log from the Ewido scan by using Add Reply

trevuren,

I folled the instructions best I could. But when I was checking the HJT scan, I couldn't find the:
02-BHO:Band Class - {01F44A8A-8C97-4325-A378-76E68DC4AB2E} - C:\WINDOWS\systb.dll
as you had listed on the items to mark and then remove. When I rebooted by computer and came on the internet to respond and post my logs a pop up imediatly came up. Did I do everything right?

We will give it another go Disregard requests for downloads when you have them already. It is important to check your log and compare the randon 04 entry with an "r" against the one you actuaaly have. If mine is wrong, change it to yours.

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [lujhlwi] C:\windows\system32\teochox.exe r

Close all open windows except for HJT, then click the Fix Checked button. Close HJT.
NOTE: The 04 entry may have changed names if you have rebooted since posting the log; look for an entry with a similar format, that will always in in a single letter r.

Locate and delete the following File in BOLD:
c:\windows\system32\teochox.exe (or whatever the name may have changed to, as noted above).

Now run CCleaner.
  • Uncheck "Cookies" under "Internet Explorer".
  • If running Firefox: click on the "Applications" tab and uncheck "Cookies" under "Firefox".
  • Click on Run Cleaner in the lower right-hand corner. This can take quite a while to run.
Finally, restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the report log from the Ewido scan by using Add Reply

hey,

thank you so much for all of your help. I followed the instructions again, and I think that it worked this time. I haven't gotten any pop-up's or anything yet, and i've been on the internet for a little while. I rebooted my computer a few times since I posted my last log, so a few things were different in the HJT log, but I think that I got them all. Here are my logs, let me know if everything checks out or if anything looks fishy. thanks again.

I also had one other question is you had a minute as well. I just wanted to know how to set up what programs come up when you start your computer. For example, AIM always pops up as soon as I start the computer, but I don't want it to automatically. Thanks again for all of your help. Much appreciated.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
  • First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:
    • Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
    • Choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
    • Uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
    • Close the window with ok
  • Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://websearch.drs...esearch.cgi?id=
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://websearch.drs...esearch.cgi?id=

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://websearch.drs...esearch.cgi?id=
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = http://websearch.drs...esearch.cgi?id=

    O2 - BHO: Band Class - {00F1D395-4744-40f0-A611-980F61AE2C59} - C:\WINDOWS\dsr.dll
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Dinst] C:\WINDOWS\dinst.exe

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode
    • Restart the computer.
    • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
    • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
    • Press Enter.
  • Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if they are present):

    C:\WINDOWS\dsr.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\dinst.exe

  • Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

  • Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now.
Regards,

Trevuren

I folled the instructions, how does it look? The only difference was that when I located the C:\WINDOWS\dsr.dll it was listed as .exe not .dll, but I think that it was the same so I deleted it.

It is looking really good. But I need you to REBOOT 3-4 times throughout the evening to make sure it doesn't pop up again. You are lucky, most people can't get rid of it. Our people are working on a solution as we speak.

Please send me a fresh log after those reboots. Thanks

Trevuren

I rebooted a few times throughout the last day or two. Here is my latest log. I hope everything still looks good. I haven't seen any pop-up ads and my computer has been running great! When I ran HJT, explorer was open I don't know if that matters. But here is it. Thanks again for all of your help.

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1. Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
2. Left click on "System Restore Tab"
3. Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
4. Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1.Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
2.Click on "Apply"

2. Cleanup the leftovers. Download CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

3. Finally, Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)

Regards,

Trevuren
