I am stumped right about now so it is time for some outside analysis. First I am going to ask you to submit a file for testing. The process takes less than 5 minutes. Depending on the results, we will proceed from there.

There is a file in your log of which I am unsure and of which there exists very little informatiion. For that reason, I need you to submit it to Jotti's for analysis.

1. Click HERE to get to Jotti's site.

2. At the top of the Jotti window, use the Browse button to locate the following file on your system:

C:\WINDOWS\dsr.dll

3. Once you have located the file, click SUBMIT and the content of the file will be uploaded by the site and analysed.

4. Please provide me with the results of the analysis.

Regards,

Trevuren

Strange that only 2 small outfits pick it up but identify it totally differently and as a possible variant.

How is your system working?

Just for your information, those two files are popping up all over the net now. A new baddie on the block that is spreading. It is difficult to keep up with them but we do our best

I need you to run a small script that will pick all instances of two files in your registry. The program is to be run twice, once for each item and I would like you to post the results in seperate posts for clarity reasons. Thanks. Hopefully, some of my people can come up with a solution to fix the problem.

1. Download "Registry Search Tool" (RegSrch.vbs) from here
http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/

2. Start it and paste in dsr.dll , wait for it to complete the search, click ok at the prompt.

3. Then when wordpad opens, copy the content back into this thread please.

Once the report has been posted, please repeat the procedure with the following file: dinst.exe and post those results also.

Nice work Mark, You have got the place astir. Some people will be doing overtime for the next day or two. I'll get back to you as soon as they can digest all these additions.

We are nearly there already. We need you to do 1 more thing before the fix is completed.

1. Pleae click Start>>Run

2. Copy/Paste the following text into the Run box and click OK

regedit.exe /e C:\drsearch.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\TypeLib\{8F73AC0F-5769-4282-8762-B396A3BFF377}"

3. If the key exists it will create the file C:\drsearch.txt
That file contains the export of the registry key.

4. Please copy the text into a Notepad text file and Paste it back into this thread.

5. If the text file in question is not there, please advise me of such.

Regards,

Trevuren

Thanks for your reply. That was the missing part of the puzzle. I will be forwarding your reply to the registry expert and it will confirm his regfix. There have been quite a few more cases like yours turning up. Let's hope that this fix will help kill this bug.

Thanks again and I hope to get back to you soob with your fix. (That doesn't quite sound right) :tazz:

1. Backup the registry by going to Start>Run> and type "regedit" without the quotes. Then on the file menu choose ‘export’ in XP. Export the file to your Desktop.

If a restore of the registry is required in case of emergency, just click on the exported regfile on your desktop, and answer YES to the question whether you want to merge this file with the registry. Wait until you get a message saying something like Merge Successfull.

2. Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into the new document. Save it to your desktop as drsearch.reg and as "AllFiles" as file type.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{00F1D395-4744-40f0-A611-980F61AE2C59}]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{8B51FC2F-C687-40a3-B54A-BB9EBF8D407F}]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{CE27D4DF-714B-4427-95EB-923FE53ADF8E}]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{E2D2FE40-5674-4b77-802B-EC86B6C2C41D}]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{E311D3A5-4A3B-4e49-9E0A-B40FAE1F0B28}]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\TypeLib\{8F73AC0F-5769-4282-8762-B396A3BFF377}]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"Dinst"=-

3. Locate drsearch.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?". Answer Yes and wait for a message to appear similar to Merged Successfully.

4. Reboot your computer into Safe Mode.

5. Using Windows Explorer, locate and DELETE the followig files:

C:\Windows\dsr.dll
C:\Windows\dinst.exe

6. Reboot into Normal Mode

7. Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

  • Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://websearch.drs...esearch.cgi?id=
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://websearch.drs...esearch.cgi?id=
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://websearch.drs...esearch.cgi?id=
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://websearch.drs...esearch.cgi?id=
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://websearch.drs...esearch.cgi?id=
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = http://websearch.drs...esearch.cgi?id=
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = websearch.drsnsrch.com/q.cgi?q=
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {00F1D395-4744-40f0-A611-980F61AE2C59} - (no file)

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • Reboot Your System

  • Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now.
Regards,

Trevuren
