First - let me say that this site has helped me out so much over the last 6 months - you guys are GREAT!

OK - I have been getting the annoying WinFixer 2005 pop-ups and fake 'scans' for a couple of weeks. I have never allowed it to install! I am also getting the "registry errors" warning <fake?> and the Runtime C++ error box <fake?>

I have completed the clean-up as mentioned in the first thread: Clean-up; Ad-aware SE; CWShredder; Spybot; Ewido; Housecall scan; and TDS. My employer offers Symantec Antivirus (though housecall caught a couple new items !) I am current with all my XP updates.

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which may not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You don’t appear to have an awful lot wrong, unless there is something invisible lurking. It’s best to err on the side of caution so bear with me whilst we try to see what is going on. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

Firstly could you please disable Microsoft Antispyware from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything. Right click on the icon (looks like an archery target) in the task bar and click on Security Agents Status (Enabled) then click on Disable Real-time Protection. To re enable it, you follow the same steps but click on Enable Real-time Protection.

Please also disable SpySweeper for the same reason.

Install Ewido Security Suite.

• Install Ewido security suite
• When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
  • Install background guard
  • Install scan via context menu
  • You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
  • Then click on Start Update.
• The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.

Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:

[*]Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
[*]The program will now open to the main screen.
[*]When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.

Now that the updates have been installed do the following:

• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• NOTE: During some scans with Ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
• Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
• Click Save report.
• Save the report .txt file to your desktop and include it in your reply.

Now close Ewido security suite.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now we must hide the files we revealed earlier by reversing the process, this is an important safeguard to stop important system files being deleted by accident.

Please download and run Silent Runners

* Please right click this link and choose save (link) as to download:Silent Runners.
* Save it to the desktop.
* Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
* You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done yet, just let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
* Once you receive the prompt "All Done!", double-click on the new text file on the desktop and copy that entire log and paste it here.

*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look. (3 logs in total)

I am unable to logon in Safe Mode. I get prompted for my Windows signon and I get an error message "could not log me on" I can't seem to get past this to my software menu. Please advise. Thanks!

This is something locally happening and not usual. Is this computer on a network?

Please proceed with the fix in normal mode and report on what you could and could not do. I am loathed to give you a workaround for safe mode as I have seen all too often a user unable to boot their PC afterwards. Let's not take chances.

I have completed the first Ewido scan (no viruses found). I ran the HiJackThis and fixed the two files you indicated. THEN I found and TRIED to delete the file: C:\winnt\addins\asip.dll However, the file won't delete because it says its in use by another user or application. I have closed all my other APPLICATIONS - still getting the same hurdle. Ideas?

Here's a way round it:

Download the following programme to the Desktop:

Killbox by Option^Explicit

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

*Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
*In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Open the text file with these instructions in it, and copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\WINNT\addins\asip.dll

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt..

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

I downloaded and installed Killbox as you directed. I entered the file name and the "Delete on Reboot" button. When I hit the red-and-white delete button - I got a confirmation "File will be deleted on reboot" I answered Yes; then I got a prompt for "Reboot now" and I clicked on "YES".
Then I got a message saying "Verifying Registry Entries - Plz Wait"
Then I got a pop-up box saying: "PendingFileRenameOperation Registry Data has been removed by external process" and I had to click on the "OK" button.
Then NOTHING happens! The Killbox menu remains on the screen, the desktop remains, and no reboot occurs! I waited for 1/2 hour and still no reboot. I forced the shutdown thru the task manager and the nasty asip.dll was still there! I repeated the HiJackThis scan, and the items you asked me to delete were also still there!

I tried the Killbox delete several times. Once I even answered "No" to the Reboot Now? prompt and then did a manual shutdown. Same result... c:\winnt\addins\asip.dll remains!

This thing is nasty! I look forward to your suggestion...

This is very unusual, do you have administrator's rights? Is this a multiple identity PC?

This sounds as though an application is preventing the changes to your registry. You have two antispyware programmes running in real time (not a good idea). Please check the status of both MSAS and Spysweeper.

To be safe, let's have a look beneath the surface.

The Silent Runners log confirms that it is just the one file that needs deleting.

C:\WINNT\addins\asip.dll

Are you able to operate your PC as a stand alone? If so, then there should not be a reason as to why it should not behave normally. However, if you are forced to join a network, and the operating system is maintained by IT staff, then you will have to speak to an administrator about the problem.

That is my opinion of why I think you are having problems. Please speak with a network administrator and be guided by them.

Afterwards, can I please see a fresh HJT log.

Hello again!

I booted up as standalone - no physical network and no wireless connection; I was also able to boot in Safe Mode, using the "SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING OPTION." I know that sounds wierd, but that option is the only one that gets me past the Windows login and password box. Our computer folks told me "That's the only Safe Mode I've ever used..."

So I was booted in Safe Mode - only the desktop applications were available; no toolbar apps; and Safe Mode in every corner of the screen. Still no changes! I try to use Killbox to delete the file C:\winnt\addins\asip.dll

Killbox prompts me to Reboot now? I click "yes" - then I get "checking registry entires Plz wait"; and then I get "PendingFileRenameOperation Registry Data has been removed by external process" and I had to click on the "OK" button.

Then... nothing.... no reboot. It doesn't hang - it just does nothing; I have full control of the laptop - just like the reboot request got ignored.

I re-ran the HJT and the 2 processes you want me to delete are still there! I "fixed" the 2 items are described above; then IMMEDIATELY repeated the HJT and they are back! So the HJT "fix" option didn't seem to do anything.

Can you give me some additional suggestions? I sure hope so!

I have been contemplating this infection and possible cure, and had some correspondence with other experts here at Geeks to Go. As a result, I am posting a cure for the Vundo or Virtumonde Trojan.

Please download and run Symantec Vundo Removal Tool

Once it is downloaded, run the tool and and let it scan your machine. It will remove any files that it finds.

Please let me have a fresh HJT log afterwards.
