1. We want to stop and disable an added service (023)

To stop a service and set to 'disabled'
  • Go to Start > Run and type in Services.msc then click OK
  • Click the Extended tab.
  • Scroll down until you find the service.
    ===>Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc)
  • Click once on the service to highlight it.
  • Click Stop
  • Right-Click on the service.
  • Click on 'Properties'
  • Select the 'General' tab
  • Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side on the 'Start-up Type' box
  • From the drop-down menu, click on 'Disabled'
  • Click the 'Apply' tab, then click 'OK'
2. Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
  • First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:
    • Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
    • Choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
    • Uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
    • Close the window with ok
  • Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [fuwz] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\fuwz\fuwzm.exe
O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe (file missing)

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • We will now delete the service:

    1. Open HJT
    2. Click on Config>>Misc Tools>>Delete an NT Service
    3. Type SvcProc in the space provided and click OK
    4. The program will ask you to REBOOT --- Accept

  • REBOOT into SAFE MODE

  • Using Windows Explorer, locate and DELETE the following file (if it still is present):

    C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\fuwz<===Folder

  • REBOOT back into Normal Mode

  • Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.
Regards,

Trevuren

Your log looks good. If you have no more malware-related problems that you are aware of, just give me the OK and we can start the final but essential cleanup procedures.

There are 2 things that I still notice.

1. When computer is shutting down, a window opens sayin ending process "Shelllconhiddenwindow". Not sure what that is.

2. The computer still take some time to start up fully.

One other question. Do I need to keep all the anti-malware stuff installed. I have recently purchased Norton Antivirus, and I know that more than one anti-virus program can cause interference.

I greatly appreciate your help.

Thanks,

Sean

1. The info on that message can be found:HERE

Your choices appear to be very straightforward. Inasmuch as it is related to "MusicMatch" you have the choice to either disable MusicMatch or UNINSTALL it completely

2. Trojan Hunter will expire and if you do not inted to purchase the program, go ahead and UNINSTALL it. I use A Squared which can be used on a free basis. It si an excellent program that goes after Trojans.

3. None of these programs interfere with Norton, as far as I know.

4. I would also keep Ewido which can still be used after the expiration of the trial period by performing manual updates. (I do)

5. The slow down is essentially due to the runnng of these programs which consume lots of resources, specially Norton, make your system slower on startup and shutdown.

6. Once you have decided what you want to do, DO IT, and repost a final HJT log for verification and inform me if you are ready for the final but so essential cleanup procedures.

Regrads,

Trevuren

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1. Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
2. Left click on "System Restore Tab"
3. Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
4. Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1.Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
2.Click on "Apply"

2. Cleanup the leftovers. Download CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

3. Finally, Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)

Regards,

Trevuren
