My problem is I need to do some home networking and need to access internet options on my home pc.
From Network Connections, I can see all my network connections. Viewing the properties of my broadband connection, there are 5 tabs: General, Options, Security, Networking and Advanced. All tabs work fine apart from Advanced. When I click on the Advanced tab, I get the message "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience". Then another message saying "DrWatson Postmortem Debugger has encountered a problem......." then explorer goes into a "not repsonding" state, so I close it using ctr-alt-delete.
Alternatively, going Control Panel -> Internet Options -> Connections (tab) -> Settings (of my internet connection) -> Properties gets me to the same properties window of my internet connection, with 5 tabs. This time clicking on the advanced tab brings up the error message box, with header RUNDLL and main message: An exception occurred while trying to run "C:\WINDOWS\system3\shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL"C"\WINDOWS\system32\inetcpl.cpl",Internet Options"
After closing this box, I get a message saying"Run DLL as and App has encountered a problem and needs to close...."
At first I had no idea what to do, but with some help, I realised I probably have some viruses/trojans on my computer.
I have followed the steps required before posting a log, except I have mcafee antivirus so I didn't use AVG, and the pandasoftware site doesn't seem to work for me. Also, I'm not sure if some virus has disabled windows update, because when I go to the page it loads the page, but no pop-up boxes or anything. I think I have SP2 installed because a search of files on my system containing sp2, found several entries in c:/WINDOWS
The programs running on startup on my system are mcafee security center, comprising mcafee virusscan, mcafee privacy service, mcafee personal firewall plus, and mcafee spamkiller. Also running is the printer software for a lexmark 2200 series printer, and possibly speedtouch modem software.
Here are some more symptoms:
I use primarily firefox but sometimes have trouble accessing https sites such as hotmail. More than half the time, I just get a blank screen but sometimes I do get through to the site I want
When forced to use internet explorer sometimes, my homepage is www.wanadoo.co.uk. When first loading this site, I always get "error on page" in the status bar at the bottom. The page turns out with all the words, but the order of the page is messed up, with all the writing in paragraphs down the left hand side. But pressing refresh makes the page turn out normally.
