Just in case the info is helpful, ewido just caught and quarantined TrojanDropper.Agent.pb (c:\windows\temp\b.com) again and shortly after, Norton caught and quarantined Trojan.ByteVerify (C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\.jpi_cache\jar\1.0\classload.jar-1f8050ce-519b7641.zip)... the idx file for the latter is still there.

dclark46,
Sorry for the delay.. Thanks for the info, yes this one is being stubborn.

Please read "ALL" of the instructions before proceeding:

Now lets run Killbox
  • Double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
  • In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
  • In the field labeled Full Path of File to Delete enter the file paths listed below ONE AT A TIME (EXACTLY as it appears, please double check to make sure!):

C:\WINDOWS\System\SYSNET.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\VISFXUN.EXE
  • Press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it after each one.
  • When it asks if you would like to delete on reboot, press the YES button, when it asks if you want to reboot now, press the NO button.
  • Do this after each one until you have entered the LAST file path I have listed above.
  • After that LAST file path has been entered, press the YES button at both prompts so that your computer restarts.
  • If you receive a message and your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.
Once your system has rebooted please do the following:

We need to run the L2Mfix again...
Here are the instructions again..

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe
  • Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe.
  • Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.
  • Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter.
    • This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log.
  • Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.
IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Thanks,
rstones12

Cool, a few suspicious looking registry entries there and it looks like nkmsapi.dll has propagated and is now running as uulmon.dll, both of which look like copies of that file guard.tmp (thought we deleted that two days ago). I am beginning to feel a real vengeance toward those Direct Revenue people.

Here's the log...

dclark46,

Good spot on those. :tazz:

Now please do this next.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.
  • From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer.
  • After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log.
  • Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log, and we'll clean up what's left. ;)
IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Thanks,
rstones12

:tazz: Holy cow... it actually looks clean. ewido guard stopped another TrojanDownloader.agent.pb and some homutil.dll or something like that that it said was Look2Me during the reboot process, but it looks like they cleaned okay. Stones, my friend, I am startin' ta get excited...

dclark46,

That is much better... :tazz:

Now lets do this...Here are the instructions again....

Download FindIt's.zip to your desktop: http://forums.net-integration.net/index.ph...=post&id=142443
  • Create a new folder on your desktop
  • Unzip/extract the files inside that folder you created on your desktop.
  • Open the folder and run FindIt's.bat and wait for notepad to open a text file. It may take awhile so please be patient ...
  • Then post the results here along with a new HJT log by using Add Reply
Thanks,
rstones12

ewido scan ran and detected 10 cookies it considered medium threats... they are all in the Firefox user defaults. Here's the list: Avenue A, Inc., DoubleClick, FastClick, MediaPlex, Qxsrv, 2o7, Casalemedia, Tribalfusion, Overture and Myaffiliateprogram. Most of those get reloaded as prefs as soon as a start Firefox again and at least two of them seem like part of the standard installation for Firefox. Should I just be ignoring them? Everything else looks pretty clean to me.

Here's the logs ------

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]

dclark46,
Your log is looking good, quite a difference from the start... :tazz:

In Firefox I would check your privacy settings:

Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies

In the drop down list next to: Keep Cookies, select "until I close Firefox"

Then click on the Clear button.....

Just a few items to remove:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\pinkkas21.ico <-- File
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\sony psp1.ico <-- File
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\xboxab.ico <-- File

How is your system running....

Thanks,
rstones12

Cool... files removed (ran CCleaner after). I wondered about those 3. I had checked them out on Jotti and they showed OK.

Anyway, except for the reboot problem with my system recovery drive, everything has been running pretty smoothly. My internet searches aren't getting redirected and the running processes all make sense.

Cleaning out the cookies for Firefox causes some issues for some sites (like my Comcast home page) so cleaning on exit may be undesirable. I tend to stick to pretty harmless sites... just need to keep my daughter off my computer, I think. :tazz:

Thanks for all your help!

dclark46,
Your HJT log looks good... :tazz:
Good work..

RE: System Recovery Drive, post a new topic to this forum:

One of our Trusted Techs should be able to assist you with this.

Please take some time and read through the following information..

Here are some items that you will want to add to your to-do list:

These are some tips to reduce the potential for Spyware/Adware/Virus infection in the future:
I would strongly recommend reviewing and installing the following applications if you dont currently have them running on your system:

Use Anti-Virus Software
It is very important that your computer has Anti-Virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.
See this link for a listing of some online and stand-alone Anti-Virus programs:
Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

Update your AntiVirus Software
It is imperitive that you update your Anti-Virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your Anti-Virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall
I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Understanding and Using Firewalls

Spyware/Adware Detection and Removal Programs:
Understanding Spyware, Browser Hijackers, and DialersAd-Aware SEIf you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to setup and use Ad-Aware SE
How to use Ad-Aware SE to remove Spyware
Spybot S&DIf you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to setup and use Spybot S&D
How to use Spybot to remove Spyware
I strongly recommend using both of these programs to catch most spyware/adware

Prevention Programs:
  • SpywareBlaster -- SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • SpywareGuard -- SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad -- IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts File -- The MVPS Hosts File replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
  • Google Toolbar -- Get the free Google Toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other Necessary Programs:
  • A More Secure Browser
Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser.
There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend using Firefox
Be sure to also keep up with Windows and IE updates.

Windows Security and Critical Updates
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Internet Explorer Security and Critical Updates
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.asp

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Update all these Programs Regularly:Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released. Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
Thanks,

Thanks, rstones12.

I have NAV but it doesn't trap spyware/adware unless it comes with or in a known virus. I do update it weekly. I have a firewall, and I had Spybot and MS AntiSyware already. I abandoned IE some time ago and have been using Firefox almost exclusively both at home and at work. I would also like to add that abstinence is always your best protection. If you stay away from unknown sites and don't click anything you are unsure of you are not likely to find much spyware. I was doing okay until my daughter got on here.

I will look over the prevention software, and would be happy to place another post about the system recovery drive.

Thanks again for all the help/advice.
