I have failed to remedy this problem despite going to deltaforce.net, as well as trying updated versions of microsoft antispyware, pc-cillin, and ad-aware (with newest beta release file).

Problem: Browser windows randomly popup, often are either ad pages for a product OR various search results . Here is what I get pretty frequently in ie url entry: "http://iccee.com/sea...hp?q=numa numa", other times there are terms (usually pornographic) that I have never entered into a search engine. I also get a lot of windows popping open at house loan sites or other realty related sites. Is VERY severe when opening up new windows.

Welcome to GTG.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [richup] C:\WINDOWS\System32\richup.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mqlvenc] C:\WINDOWS\mqlvenc.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mqlvdll] C:\WINDOWS\mqlvdll.EXE
O23 - Service: Remote Packet Capture Protocol v.0 (experimental) (rpcapd) - Unknown owner - %ProgramFiles%\WinPcap\rpcapd.exe" -d -f "%ProgramFiles%\WinPcap\rpcapd.ini (file missing)

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\richup.exe
C:\WINDOWS\mqlvenc.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\mqlvdll.EXE

Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

NOTE: THANK YOU, THANK YOU.
System seems (ALMOST) perfect now.... so what exactly was the hijacker and is there a reason both PC-Cillin and AD-Aware missed it both when coming in and when I manually scanned?

****** As for the "ALMOST", I've now get a message when loading windows about a "bad installer" for something called NSIS. Any idea what that is?

They didn't catch it because it's not known to them. Most of these are just randomly named anyway and not every program can detect all the junk out there. So that's why we ask users to use multiple tools to help us diagnose these problems.

Could you give me a screenshot of this? This might not be related to spyware anymore, but let's see. You might have to post in the Windows Forum if anything.

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

Please make sure that Word Wrap is disabled in Notepad before you post a log next time. The format it created makes it hard for me to read it (take a look above and you'll see what I mean). Well, I looked through it and nothing is alarming in there.

Let's do this:

Right click on http://www.silentrun...ent Runners.vbs and choose Save As...Save it to your Desktop. Make sure you have disabled any programs that may block/disable scripts (ex: Ad-Watch, TeaTimer, Norton, etc.). Double click on 'Silent Runners' to run it. This will take a few minutes. It will create a file called 'Startup Programs' followed by your computer name and current date. Open up that file and post all the contents here in your next post.

Run both these scans:

Run an online virus scan at TrendMicro http://uk.trendmicro...call_launch.php. Just follow the instructions on the site to run the free online scan. If any viruses/trojans are detected, try to delete or clean them in that site. If any are not cleanable, copy and paste the infected files here. You may also use Panda ActiveScan at http://www.pandasoft...ucts/activescan. Post the log from the Panda scan here.

here is the startup log file (sorry about the wordwrap last time). The results of the virus scan can be found just beneath the line that reads VIRUS SCAN REPORT. Below that is most recent Hijack This report, begins just below line that reads HIJACK THIS REPORT hope your have a "find" command to quickly get to those areas.

No problem. We're trained to read these huge logs :tazz: I can see where everything is ;)

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to Start->Run and type in regedit and hit OK. Go to File->Export and save the registry somewhere as a backup. While in the Registry Editor, navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\ and delete MAGNET - not sure, but I think this entry belongs to P2P file sharing programs which I see that you have. You might want to leave it alone in that case - if you want to keep Ares.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ and delete RICHED

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\INTERNET EXPLORER\ACTIVEX COMPATIBILITY\ and delete {53F066F0-A4C0-4F46-83EB-2DFD03F938CF}

If any of the above registry keys are giving you problems deleting, right click on them and click on Permissions. Then click on the Advanced button. Make sure the first box (Inherit from parent...) is checked. Click OK and OK. Then try deleting the entry again. Once you're done, close the Registry Editor.

Delete these two files:

C:\protas.exe
C:\Program Files\Ares\My Shared Folder\Zoo Tycoon Key Generator.exe

Restart.

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

:)
Everything seems back to normal. I don't use Ares, but do use Shareaza on occaision ;)

I do appreciate your help, and will be showing that through Paypal.... do you have a snail mail address as well?

I have been using personal computers since 1983, and never had a virus before. The only thing I've done differently lately is a small one-man computer shop installed some memory for me and ran a bootable cd he had to "test" my laptop out. I have installed memory, harddrives etc before - but always on desktops. Not comfortable with my laptop yet.

Thanks again, and other than a snail mail address - heres hoping I never see you again!
