Windows xp pro, service pack 1, sp2 NOT installed.
2.8ghz, 512 ram

for the past two days, i think becuase i accidentally downloaded some files with alot of malware, my Computer Associates Anti-Virus real-time protection has been detecting "Win32.BettInet.AR" about every 2 minutes, and "Win32.BettInet.AW trojan" occassionally. Everytime, it seems that a new directory "xx.tmp" with a "thnall1a.exe" is created in the
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\(user name)\LOCAL SETTINGS\Temp\
and occasionally a .html file with a bunch of random numbers and letters as the file name seems to be created in
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\(user name)\LOCAL SETTINGS\Temporary internet files\Content.IE5

the weird thing is, i actually don't see any of the thnall1a.exe files that my anti-virus detects, when i tried to look for it in windowsexplorer.

i've used cleanup! and the Trend Housecall online scan but neither detects any of the files.

with Ad-aware, i'm able to detect a VX2 spyware in the registry, and i remove it, but it just shows up again when i reboot, so it seems like it's impossible to remove it.

Same with Spybot, it detects ABetterInternet, but detects the same thing again when i scan about 10 minuters after reboot (it somehow won't detect it when i scan within 10 minutes after reboot) even i if had previously removed it.

interestingly, with ewido scan, it detects the ABetterInternet malware in the WINDOWS\system 32, BUT, it only detects it one by one. what i mean by that is that i am able to remove one ABetterInternet file, say for an example, qzmgfg.exe, but when i scan again, another .exe file with random letters is detected, something like iekicp.exe.

heres my log.

Hello and welcome to Geeks To Go.

I am UKBiker and will be helping you with this log.

Lets start out with some general scans and see if we cant clean things up a little.

+++++ Step 1 +++++

Please download Ewido security suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install Ewido security suite
  • Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
    • Binder
    • Crypter
    • Archives
  • Click on Start Scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop
+++++ Step 2 +++++

Please run an on-line virus scan at Kaspersky OnLine Scan or if that doesnt work, you can use TrendMicro or BitDefender. (Please post the results of the scan(s) in your next reply)

+++++ Step 3 +++++

After that, I will need to see two different logs from HiJackThis. The first is the normal log like you posted here. To get the other one, follow these directions.

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Post back with those logs and we can continue from there.

If you have recieved help elsewhere or no longer need our assistance, please let us know.

ok, well i turned on my comp for the first time in few days, and somehow, i now don't get any of the annoying anti-virus real time protection pop ups, but instead, somehow, i got
2005/07/31 15:25:42.056 File infection: C:\System Volume Information\_restore{1F43FF7F-FC59-4AC5-994B-440C67FF85B7}\RP140\A0018163.exe is Win32.BettInet.BD trojan. Deleted
2005/07/31 16:13:56.909 File infection: C:\System Volume Information\_restore{1F43FF7F-FC59-4AC5-994B-440C67FF85B7}\RP143\A0018228.exe is Win32.BettInet.BD trojan. Deleted

so, is my computer now free from ABetterInternet malware?? well, i'll still post the logs anyway.

Hi There

I have had a good look through the log and it seems fairly clean, however. given that we are looking for VX2 etc, and as I am a naturally suspicious sort of a person, i would like to look a bit deeper. As you have run some applications already, I would like you to do some you to do some general cleaning to remove the debris created.

1.- Please delete everything held in quarantine by any of your security applications.

2.-Now you have to clean out your temporary files and flush your restore points:
  • Start | Run | type cleanmgr | OK
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Click "OK" to remove them.
  • Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.
3.-Flush System Restore.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
3.1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check "Turn off System Restore."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

3.2. Reboot.

3.3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check "Turn off System Restore".

Hi There keisukey

there are just a few leftovers to clear up now :tazz: .

Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):

Content Delivery Module
WeirdOnTheWeb

Please note any other programs that you dont recognize in that list in your next response

Still in Safe Mode, Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):

C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\KEISUKE\FAVORITES\WeirdOnTheWeb.url
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SahImages

Still in Safe Mode, please scan with Ewido and have it fix anything it finds, post the Ewido log here for me

After that, Reboot.

Please re run the Panda scan as before and post its log and the Ewido log here for me.

Hiya

Yes delete that application from add/remove programmes in safe mode,

While in safe mode, also delete with windows explorer

C:\WINDOWS\weirdontheweb_topc.exe

I would do a search for and delete any other files containing weirdontheweb in the filename, other than those contained in quarantines of one sort or another.

Regarding the Registry entry for Aurora, did the Pandascan give a registry location? Are you comfortable with editing the registry?

sorry for the late reply! no, pandascan did not give me a registry location. I'm not a expert user but i think i could manage editing the registry as long as i receive instructions...

Hello keisukey,

Here is what I would like you to do for me.

Copy the code in the box below to a notepad then save this to your desktop as remove.reg then once saved please boot your computer into safe mode.

Regedit4
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\UNINSTALL\CDM]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\AURORA]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\SURFSIDEKICK3]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\REVISIONS]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\INTERNET EXPLORER\ACTIVEX COMPATIBILITY\{53F066F0-A4C0-4F46-83EB-2DFD03F938CF}]

Then once in safe mode please find the remove.reg on your desktop and double click on it to allow it to merge into the registry.

After this is complete please reboot into normal mode.

Then please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

After this please reboot your computer and then post a new hijack this log and the scan log from ewido.

Thank you,

Snickets

Hello keisukey,

Step 1-

1.Please download the free trial for SpySweeper here and then save the installer to your desktop.

2. After the download is complete please double click on the installation executable on the desktop and allow it to install on your machine.

3. After it is done installing please run SpySweeper at this time, and once it opens please click on the tab that says Options and check for updates.

4. Once this is complete click on the tab that says Sweep Now and allow it to run a complete scan of your machine. Remove any items that are found after it is complete.

5. Please reboot your computer now.

Step 2-

Once back in normal mode please post the results from SpySweeper by opening up the program and clicking on the tab that says Results. Then copy and paste this information into your next reply along with a new hijack this scan.

Thank you,

Snickets
