Hi guys, I've followed all the steps and following is the hijackthis logfile; but before here are my problems:

My computar had been running a bit slower, using CPU usage up to 100% on just simple tasks such as opening folders. When I upgraded my Norton anti-virus to Internet Security, it found a few things trying to connect to my computer; I then found out that I had, Aurora, Adware.BetterInternet, Istbar in my computer. In attempt to clean my computer up, I searched many forums, did a few things such as dowload and run Nailfix.exe, Ewido and Hijackthis. My Norton is not giving me any more pop ups saying that anything is trying to connect to my computer, but I cannot connect to secure websites anymore, and it is still slow. About the secure websites, I've checked Internet Options and SSL2.0, SSL3.0,TSL1.0 are all checked; some websites give me the following message "Current security settings prohibit running Active X controls on this page", so I also checked Internet Options, Security, Custom Level and they seem to be normal (I even entered some websites in the Trusted Sites, and had no success!).
So I don't know if I got rid of all the Malware and also deleted some stuff I shouldn't have, but my computer is still slow while in Windows and when starting up. I also need to view those secure websites, and download Windows update SP1A. I hope this is not too much! Thank you for any help!!

Ad-aware SE- the program freezes before finishing the scan, always stops when scanning Browser cache (it finds some things, Registry Keys and Values)

Ewido Security Suite- OK
Trend Housecall - Homepage; - I could not get to it as it gave me the message "Current security settings prohibit running Active X controls on this page" (I could not access Panda either).
Windows Update - Homepage - Download SP1a; I could not start downloading SP1A, I think due to the same problem as it is a secure page.

Hi, thank you for your answer!

Here is what I did since I last wrote previous topic.
I downloaded Mozilla Firefox, with that I could see secure webs, and I also found some help in the forum, and was able to download and install SP1a. Then I went through all the steps again, but I still cannot finish the Adaware scan, though I deleted all it finds until it freezes. Spybot, Ewido and TrojanHorse are not finding anything, but Trend Housecall finds Troj.Keenval.E, and it cannot delete it, and I cant either.
I did what you wrote, and my Internet Explorer still cannot open some sites. But the most annoying thing, is that my computer is still extremely slow, to start the computer takes forever, and CPU usage goes very easily to 100%. Is there a way to organize, find out what programs are running on the background all the time? I know we can do that in Task Manager, but I just don't know what is important, and what is not.

Here are few things to check.

Verify that Internet Explorer Is Using 128-Bit Encryption

To check:
In Internet Explorer, on the Help menu, click About Internet Explorer
The level of encryption on your computer appears next to the words Cipher Strength. Verify that the Cipher Strength value appears as 128-bit
If the Cipher Strength is anything less then 128-bit, download the Internet "Explorer High Encryption Pack" to your computer's hard disk, and then install it.

Delete Temporary Internet Files

There's also a possibility of some corrupted files in your Temporary Internet Files (TIF) storage (especially considering Ad-Aware freezes whilst scanning your browser cache). To clear these:

In Internet Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Internet Options, and select the General tab.
Under Temporary Internet files, click Delete Files, and place a check in the "delete all offline content" box and click OK.


Configure Internet Explorer Security, Content, and Advanced Settings

1. From within Internet Explorer click the Tools menu and then click on Internet Options.
2. Click once on the Security tab
3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
4. Click once on the Custom Level button.a) Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
b) Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
c) Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
d) Change the File Download to Prompt
e) Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
f) Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
g) Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
5. Click 'OK' and save the settings if prompted.
6. Click Apply and then 'OK' to exit the Internet Properties page.


Clear the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) slate and AutoComplete history:

In Internet Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Internet Options, and select the Content tab.
Under Certificates, click Clear SSL State
Click OK when you receive the message that the SSL cache was successfully cleared
Under Personal information, click AutoComplete
Under Clear AutoComplete history, click Clear Forms. Click OK when you are prompted to confirm the operation.


Verify that the Date and Time Settings on Your Computer Are Correct:

Because SSL certificates have an expiry date, if the date on your computer isn't correct, it may prevent you from connecting to secure sites. To verify that your computer is configured with the correct date and time settings:

Click Start > click Control Panel
Click Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options, and then click Date and Time
Select the Date & Time tab
Check to make sure that the date and time settings are configured to use the current date and time, and then click OK

Check the file integrity of the IE and Outlook:

Start | Run and type scf /scannow (It might ask for the Windows CD to upload the corrupted files)

Re-registering the softpub.dll (dynamic link library) :

Start | Run and type “regsvr32 softpub.dll” (without quotes) and wait for the OK message; then try those sites again.


If you're still having problems, we'll take a closer look inside.

Did these problems start after upgrading Norton?

Cool, I can now access those websites with no problem. Just one thing, when I ran scf /scannow, it just gave me an error, saying it could not find SCF. Also, I just tried running Ad-aware and it still freezes while scanning Browser Cache.

Before I upgraded Norton, the computer was already slow, but I just became aware that I had spyware (Aurora, Nail, BetterInernet; it kept giving me popups).
Now my biggest concern is the speed of the computer. Do you have any suggestions? Also, do you have any suggestions to help me keep my computer free of any dodgy things?

Did you notice the space in the command? sfc /scannow

Have you tried uninstalling Ad-Aware and downloading it again? You may have a corrupted file.

Can you run Trendmicro now? If not, try the java based version here.


As far as the speed of the machine is concerned, when was the last time you defragged the hard drive? That will undoubtedly speed things up a little.

The 04 entries in your log represent which programs load at startup. You can check out what they are by pasting the name in [brackets] or the .exe into the data entry box on CastleCops Startup list. You've got quite a few which aren't necessary at startup that could be removed with HJT.

You could also try using a registry cleaner such as the excellent RegSupreme from MaceCraft which is free to try and costs very little to purchase.

Hi, sorry for taking so long writting back. Here is what I did, ran sfc /scannow, cleaned up quite a lot of things from my startup list using Hijackthis and CastleCops Startup list. I also used RegSupreme and defraged the computer. I have ran Trendmicro, it found Troj.Keenval.E (it said it could not delete it), but it did not find it just now when I ran it again.
My computer's speed hasn't really improved, still taking a long time to start and Cpu usage to 100% easily. There is ccApp.exe in my Task Manager, and I think it is from Norton Antivirus and it uses about 20K of mem usage. Do you think I should maybe uninstall Norton and see if it gets better? If so, should I try re-installing it or maybe getting another antivirus program?

Norton has long been associated with hogging resources so trying another AV might be an option even if it's just to rule it out as a cause. Conflicts between software titles can happen at any time so it would be good if you could pinpoint exactly when the trouble started. Was it after upgrading to NIS 2005 or before?

Do you remember installing anything else around the time or upgrading any hardware drivers?


In the meantime, lets take a closer look inside in case anything is lurking.

Download WinPFind.zip from here and extract it to your C:\ folder.

This will create a folder called WinPFind in the C:\ folder.

Important! Reboot in Safe Mode !!

Double-click WinPFind.exe inside c:\WinPFind to launch the program.

Then click on the Start Scan button and wait for it to finish.

This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works as it can take a while, upwards to 30 minutes or more.

When it is done, it will show the results of the scan.

Click on the Copy to Clipboard button and then paste the contents of the log in your clipboard in your next reply along with the answers to my questions in bold above.

Hi John, to tell you the truth, I think it was before I upgraded Norton that the computer became slow. I installed a few programs that I can think of, Skype, SonyEricsson communication suite (to connect phone to computer) which I just uninstalled it, and an upgrade of GuitarPort (I think). I don't really remember exactly what time it was, I just thought that my hard disk was getting full (I think 10% free), and I just thought it was because of that, but after deleting a lot of stuff and defraging the disk, the problems were still there.
Following is the log that I made as you told in SafeMode of WinPFind (I uninstalled Ad-aware and forgot to install it again before doing this), again thank you for your help:

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

After I wrote the last one, I had my Task Manager on and left the performance windows open. I was just walking by the computer, with nothing open, and the CPU usage was at 90%, and it had been like that for a while, as I saw the graph showing a constant line at about 90%. I then opened this website, and was just looking at the cpu usage going up to 100%, about a minute later it just suddenly came down all the way to about 0%-5% (which I guess that is what it should be) and it is staying like that.


One thing I did not write before and I dont know if it is relevant; when my windows starts, on the bottom right of the screen, Norton keeps flashing a screens saying something like Rules automatically created for Microsoft Printer Spooler Service (I have no idea what this is). It flashes about 5 times, then just stops.

There are two files which WinPFind found that can go.

Download Killbox from here.

Double-click on KillBox.exe to launch the program.

• Click on Delete on Reboot.
• Paste the line below into the top Full Path of File to Delete field.
  
• C:\WINDOWS\system32\msdlupd.dll
  
• Click on the Unregister .dll Before Deleting checkbox (if not greyed out).
• Click the Delete File button which looks like a stop sign.
• Confirm the deletion when prompted but decline to reboot.
• Repeat the above steps for the following line:
• C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\UNACE.DLL

After you add the last file and it prompts to reboot, you should press the Yes button to allow it to do so. If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message then just restart manually.


Then go to PC Pitstop and run a few of there hardware tests. We might get a pointer from there.

Then let me have another WinPFind log from Safe Mode so I can check those files are gone.

EDIT: Just seen your last post. I had a quick look on Google and found an answer to the exact same printer spooler messages with Norton. Unfortunately, the answer is hidden unless you sign up here.

Here is the answer anyway.

I managed to get it to stop!

I had a good look through the event viewers and saw several warnings about "Microsoft Office Document Imaging" doing things.  After doing a web search I saw that people had had problems with the print spooler stopping and not starting properly after installing imaging or fax spooler software.

Seeing as I didn't even know I had this Microsoft Office Document Imaging installed, but had recently upgraded to Office 2003, it sounded to me like something was mucking around with the standard Windows print spooler service.  Turns out that it just installs itself with Office 2003and is an OCR package of some description.  I don't use it.

I went to Add/Remove programs in the Control panel and changed the install of Office and selected the 'choose advanced options' or something like that, found the Microsoft Office Document Imaging component and then changed it to "Install on first use" (you can aso choose "Not available").

No messages about the print spooler service since.

A second reply after this one confirmed the fix.

Hi John, I did what you wrote in the last reply. I just have not had time to do the Printer Spooler thing, but thanks for finding that out.

I ran tested my PC in PC Pitstop, everything was ok except for disk and internet. This is what it found for drive C:

TIP > Unusually low disk performance
Drive C has an uncached speed of 3 megabytes per second.

For comparison, systems with the same CPU and clock speed as this one have a speed of 35.7 MB/s.
For solutions:
-Delete unneeded files and defragment your disk
-Disable background software
-Make sure DMA is enabled on all disk drives
-Update the driver for your disk controller
-Avoid data compression or data encryption
-Avoid small cluster sizes on NTFS

I have ran defrag a few days ago, and also disabled a lot of unecessary softwares that were running in the background; but I did not do the other ones, I just wanted to see what you think first.


For the Internet, TIP > Adjust Browser Cache Size (which I did).


When I ran WinPFind in SafeMode, the CPU usage also was going to 100% easily.

It is not allowing me to download Service Pack 2. When I go to that link, it is giving me the error:

The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.
Top right says Error number: 0x800B0001
I've tried all the security levels in Internet Options, and also turning off Norton, and it still does not work.
I also tried through that automatic updates, and I clicked to download Service Pack 2 from there, but nothing seems to happen.
Any suggestions? Thanx, Andre.
