It looks like a component of Windows XP that processes digital signatures is damaged.

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
3. At the command prompt, type regsvr32 softpub.dll, and then press ENTER. <--note the space in the middle of the command!!
4. Click OK when you receive the message that DllRegisterServer in Softpub.dll succeeded.
5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 for the following files:

Wintrust.dll
Initpki.dll
Dssenh.dll
Rsaenh.dll
Gpkcsp.dll
Sccbase.dll
Slbcsp.dll
Mssip32.dll
Cryptdlg.dll


6. Type exit, and then press ENTER to quit Command Prompt.


Then try installing SP2 again. :tazz:

Cool, I've downloaded and installed lots of updates, including the SP2. The start up is still really slow.
I'll use the computer a bit and let you know how it goes. They are showing me that there are a few more updates to be downloaded, should I do it?

Hi John, the computer still seems to be running slow with CPU going up quite a bit for not much reason. I also ran Ad-aware and it still freezes while scanning Browser Cache, I've deleted the files before it starts to freeze, and running it again, but it still freezes (I've also re-installed it). Another thing is that, after a few days using the computer, Ad-aware finds the same things it deleted previously.
Do you have any other suggestions? Should I try uninstalling Norton to see if it runs quicker, or is there any thing else i can do?
Note: the computer is ok apart from the CPU usage going up for not much reason.

I'm sorry to hear you're still having problems. Try running through this Ad-Aware troubleshoot to see if it makes any difference:

Also try running CHKDSK on your C:

Go to My Computer and right click on your C:

Select Properties | Tools.

Click the 'Check Now' button under the Error Checking section.

Place a check in the boxes "Automatically fix file system errors" and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" and then click Start.

Reboot the machine and chkdsk will start to scan for corrupted files.

Hi John, I ran scandisk and after I could run adware all the way without freezing up. The computer is still running slow. I deleted loads more stuff from my hard disk and will do another defrag.
Another thing I checked is that in Processes, I have 6 svchost.exe running (3 are system, 2 network service, 1 local service) all using about 43,000k of memory; is that normal?

One down, one problem to go :tazz:

It's not unusual and quite normal to have numerous svchost's running at once so don't concern yourself with those.

It may be an idea to run some diagnostics on your RAM at this point.

You can do this at memtest86.

Show me another HJT log when you're finished, it's been a while since you posted one.

Hi John, I ran the test, and it ran 5 times, and it found no errors. I then stopped it, I think it was just running the same tests over and over again. I've been just watching the processes and their CPU usage, the spikes happen with ccApp.exe and also a ccEvtMgr.exe going near or above 50%. Most of the time, it is System Idle Process at 99 (which I believe is good).

Those processes are both connected to Norton so uninstalling it might not be a bad idea if it's really annoying you.

On a side note, I see you have an Incredimail active X entry. Are you using this software?

Go here for info on how to transfer your emails to an alternative email client and proper removal instructions if you decide to get rid.
