Firts of all, I have completed all of the steps required for new users. I have run all of the programs as stated. I had this same attack a few months ago and came here for help... you guys are super. The culprit was hiding in C://documents and settings/ application data under a folder titled Enc Mulit and I didn't know it. I was cleaning out old files from C. I opened one of the files in that folder and the spy tried to immediately change my browser. Spyblaster detected the attack and warned me of it. A small window popped up that gave me the option of using a BHO... I didnt know what it was so I clicked no. Big mistake on my part. As soon as I clicked no the attacker took over and my browser changed. I now think that the BHO was being offered by Spyblaster to stop the intruder. This attacker shuts down my System Restore capabilities and also my GoBack capabilities so I cannot restore my computer. Because none of my programs detected this (I have all the ones you have listed), I can only send you my Hijack This log. Here it is:

I am so sorry this happened again and I'll be much more careful next time. I just didnt expect to have that file on my computer. I have deleted the ENC Multi folder that contained the attacker.

I just moved hijack this into its own folder on my C drive.
A couple of days ago I was able to do a search and find my previous post in geeks to go. I referenced that hijacker solution to clean out the bad reg files and other maliscious files that had been implanted on my computer this time. I have saved all solutions that I have gotten from G2G in MsWord. I was able to clean my computer and rid myself of the hijacker on my own. It was a bit more tricky this time because of the different file names but I did it. It's been three days and my computers running like new again. I'm still going to submit hijack this's logfile for you to look over if you dont mind. I was very slow and cautious when deleting things in my registry and it turned out fine.
I have one small question. I went to CNET today and found a tip about making C:\WINDOWS\System32\etc\hosts (the hosts file) read only. I read that this disables the hijackers ability to add changes to my browser because they can no longer add things that enable them to make changes to my browser. Was this good advice?

Yes, that's good advice. You can even take it a step further and install a program like Spyware Blaster, which can make backups of your hosts file that you can restore if malware mucks up your current one.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

• Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

• Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
• Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

• Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  
  
• Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

• Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  
  
• Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

• Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

• Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
