I have 5 symtoms. All of which began simultaneously:

1. A red circle with a white exclamation mark on the toolbar, which launches a PSGuard window.
2. A black background to my desktop with a warning message: "Your computer might be infected with spyware or adware!!!".
3. Inability to alter some desktop settings
4. General slowness
5. McAfee Virus Scan finds:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wer8274.dll which I can't get rid of

Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks

Welcome laura griffith to Geeks to Go!

Please download the latest version of HiJack This. Click here to download the latest version (1.99.1). Please save it in a permanent folder (such as C:\HJT). This is to ensure that backups are saved and accessible in the event you should need it. Follow the instructions below if you are unsure how to save it in a permanent folder:1.) Click on the link to download HiJackThis.exe.
2.) When it pulls up the box (for you to pick a location to save the file), click on the pulldown menu and select "[C:]".
3.) Click on the button to "create new folder" and name the folder HiJackThis
4.) Double click on the folder you just made (to go into the folder) and click "save" on the bottom of the box.
Double-click HijackThis.exe. Run a scan and save the log. Post that log here in your reply by ussing the button 'add reply'.

This is all looking great. I followed the clear instructions, and everything seems back to normal. Thank you so much for your help. Log files pasted below.

Just one query: I could not get the Panda Active scan to work.
When I click the shortcut I put on the desktop, should it launch an appplication or a webpage? I got a web page, then hit Scan Now. I was instructed to download stuff, but this failed.

Thanks again.

Let's see what we can do about Panda not working.

Download CleanUp!.
If that doesn’t work, use
this link.
Here is a tutorial which describes its usage:
http://www.bleepingc...tutorial93.html

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
*Click "Options"
*Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
*Put a check next to the following:
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Scan local drives for temporary files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

Once it's done, press Close. Reboot the system. This will remove files that were in use during the scan.

***

Open HijackThis
Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

O16 - DPF: {9A9307A0-7DA4-4DAF-B042-5009F29E09E1} (ActiveScan Installer Class) - http://www.pandasoft.../as5/asinst.cab

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running.
Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot once more. See if it will run now. I'm not sure what is causing this.

EDIT:
As there has been no reply from the original poster for more than two weeks this topic is now closed.
