Hi. A couple of weeks ago, my computer's hard drive crashed and I had one of the staff members working with me on a hijackthis log file to possibly root out any viruses or malware. Due to the crash, I sent in my hard drive and had it replaced. I was told to submit aanother hijackthislog when I got my computer back.

Below is my log. Can someone check to see that everything running should be running? I have been experiencing problems in the two days I have had my computer back that my processor speed (which should be at 1.7 GHz) is only running at 595 MHz. In addition, when I run trillian, my cpu usage is often at 100% and slows down the computer drastically.

Hello, welcome to the GeekstoGo Forums!

My name is Justin, and I will be helping you clean up your system. Lets get started!

Download these files:
Restore Alex.regRight click this and save as. Save to your desktop.
Related.htm Right click this and save as. Save to your desktop.

Did they take the files off your old hard drive and put them on this new HD? Or is your current HD brand new with none of your old files on it?

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Take the Related.htm that you downloaded and replace it with the related.htm in C:\Windows\Web

Then Click on Fix Alexa.reg

Reboot your computer and then post a new HiJackThis log for me.

Hello!

You may remove Alexa.reg from your desktop.

Related.htm is still bad on your computer. So lets ru na few scans that should clear it up.

Please update, configure, and run Ad-aware and Spybot S&D as below:
Make sure you're using the latest version of Ad-aware(Ad-aware SE 1.05) If you're using an older version, download AdAware SE Personal 1.06 and install it.

Before scanning with Ad-aware SE Free:
Run a FULL adaware scan using the following configuration below
  • Update
    • Select Check for updates.
    • Then Connect and download SE1R28 16.02.2005 .
  • Click Start
  • Select Perform Full System Scan and hit Next to let Ad-Aware scan your drives.
  • It will list malware files and registry keys. Click Next.
  • Under the Critical Objects tab, rightclick in the list, choose Select All, then Next.
  • It will ask for verification of checked items-. Choose OK.
  • Close Ad-Aware, Shut down and reboot your system.
Scanning in Spybot Search and Destroy:

1. Download and Install Spybot S&D, accepting the Default Settings
(Please ensure you have version 1.3 final.)
Home - The home of Spybot-S&D!: http://www.safer-networking.org/
Here is a nice Tutorial http://www.safer-net...p?page=tutorial

2. Go to Start > Programs >Spybot Search & Destroy and choose 'Spybot S&D'

3. Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D

4. Click the button 'Search for Updates' and download and install the Updates.

5. Next click the button 'Check for Problems'

6. When Spybot is complete, it will be showing 'RED' (RED) entries BLACK entries and GREEN (GREEN) entries in the window

7. Make sure there is a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.

8. Choose Fix Selected Problems and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

9. REBOOT

The system seems to be fine most of the time. Every now and then, it slows down significantly because Trillian is using 100% of the CPU resources. I was wondering if there was a way to solve this problem.

The only other problem I'm facing right now is that when windows tries to update the xp service pack 2, during the installation it says "setup cannot copy the file fp40text.cab. Ensure that the location specified below is correct, or change, and insert 'Windows XP Service Pack 2 Source Files' in the drive you specify. This happens for a whole list of files. I do not know how to fix this and I know this probably isn't the right topic to post on this matter, but I was wondering if you could direct me to the right resources.

Thanks for all your help.

Sincerely,
thefyu.

thefyu,

I want to address the Win XP SP2 issue before anything else.

I want to rule out something, and if all is good, we can check a few more things about SP2.

Please go HERE (Microsoft website) using Internet Explorer (not Firefox or any other browser as they won't work)
  • Click on Windows Validation Assistant
  • Click on the Validate Now button.
  • Be patient while the ActiveX loads, do not click on any links.
  • Read the instructions on this page while it's loading. You will be prompted to install - click YES.
  • Enter your product key then click continue
  • When it says "Validation Complete" please click Continue to return to your previous activity
  • Copy what it says and paste it here.

After going through the windows validation, the page following "return to previous activity" says:

Thank you for running the Windows Validation Assistant. It appears that your Windows Product Key is valid.

This is a strong indicator that your operating system is genuine, however the Windows Validation Assistant cannot make a final determination.

To verify that you received a genuine Certificate of Authenticity and software CD, compare your anti-piracy features in the next section.

Hello

If you have your Windows XP CD.

Please put it in the CD Drive, and copy the following files:

From your WinXP CD
Copy Fp4autl.dll, Fpencode.dll, and Fp4awel.dll from \i386\Fp40ext.cab.

To [LOCAL DRIVE]:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\40\bin.

Then try to apply SP2.

If you do not have the CD,

Click Start, then Run.

Type in SFC /scannow

This will launch the system file checker. After it is complete, attempt to install SP2.

Dear Justin,

I ran the SFC /scannow program and tried to reinstall the service pack but the same error occurred again.

thefyu,

The Helpers here a GTG are baffled about this. We came up with one idea, and if it doesnt work, we will come up with more!

Lets show hidden folders.

Open windows explorer.
Click on tools
Click on Folder Options
Click on the View Tab
Select Show Hidden Files and Folders

Look in this folder C:\windows\inf and right-click branches.inf to make sure "read-only" is not selected.

If you change something, try installing SP2.

Let me know what happens!

Hello.

Where are you downloading SP2 from? Also have you tried redownloading it and then reinstalling it?

Try deleting the SP2 installer, if then redownloading. Then try to reinstall it.

The SP2 is coming from the automatic updates that Windows provides me. How do I uninstall the SP2 download?
